Joseph Awinongya Jr. dethroned Malachi Georges in the men’s 90 kg (198lbs) at the US National Championships. This means Joseph gets to go to selection camp in hopes of been selected into the Elite (National) team.

This team will be groomed for the 2028 Olympics.

Note about USA selection: All Elite boxers in the team usually have to still prove themselves each year during national championships to stay in the team. Malachi Georges was the fighter in the USA Elite team in 90Kg and competed in Brazil and Kazakhstan World Boxing Cups and the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, UK this year.

Congrats to the 18 year old Jojo who has now won his 26th nationals title. He was born to Ghanaian parents. His dad was a boxer in Ghana who retired in the USA and decided to go into coaching.

Aspiring First Vice President of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF),Nii Gonti Adjor 1 aka Nii Adama Addy, owner of The Gym and former manager of former IBF Bantamweight Champion Joseph Agbeko aka 'Fresh King Kong' has called for accountability before the upcoming elections fixed for December 27, 2025.

He said the old administration must hand over a clean account of records over the past four years.

The Atukpai Mantse expressed that the new administration must start on a clean safe slate so that their achievements and successes can be measured.

Nii Gonti said many things have not gone well and right in recent times with both amateur and professional boxing.

He noted that a sound well nurtured amateur boxer will turn into a disciplined professional boxer so there is a link between the two categories.

He urged boxing stakeholders to press upon the IMC to hand over the administration of professional boxing to a democratically elected body.

The CEO of Omashi Media said the IMC must consult the stakeholders to draw a roadmap to the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) much expected elections.

His call for accountability and transparency was supported by Solomon Otoo who is also going for the Second Vice President position.

Alhaji Dauda Fuseni is going for President while Mustapha Nettey wants to be retained as Treasurer.

Others named for executive members are Ms. Sarah Lotus Asare, Rasheed Williams and Dave Bishop.

Incumbent President Bernard Quartey is in the race.

Sharaf Mahama, son of President John Dramani Mahama has led a health walk on Saturday to create awareness on the upcoming Boxing Showdown at the UG Sports Stadium on December 20.

Popular former boxers, Ayitey Powers and Bukom Banku were among the guests at the Walk as well as ace promoter, Alex Ntiamoah and George Lamptey former President of the Ghana Boxing Federation who is still a board member of the Ghana Olympic Committee. Sammy Anim Addo of Baby Jet Promotions and manager of John Laryea was present as well as Hon. Nii Kotey Ashie MP for Odododiodoo..

Two British light heavyweight boxers are on the 10 bouts bill plus Freezy Macbones (Seth Gyimah) versus Worldwide (Jonathan Tetteh), Featherweight prospects Holy Dorgbetor versus John Laryea and others. Rising title potentials of Ghana Theophilus Allotey, Sampson Segbedzi and Abdula would also fighting on the stage by Matchroom Sports and Legacy Rise Sports Promotions.

According to Sharaf Mahama, it is going to be the biggest boxing show of 2025 and called on all boxing fans not to be left out, but attend to make it a full success, as top musicians and celebrities are going to show up at the showdown.

Ghana’s national youth swimming team is in Luanda, Angola for the 4th African Youth Games scheduled for December 10–20, 2025.

The delegation includes four swimmers - Kelvin Abdallah, Mercedes Abdallah, Oduma Agyei, and Tamba Akin Boamah - led by head coach Jonathan Amoako-Atta and team leader Charles Mensah.

The continental event will be staged across six host cities - Luanda, Benguela, Lubango, Huambo, Moçâmedes, and Caxito - with the swimming competition set for December 11–16.

In the girls’ division, Oduma Agyei will race in the 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly, and 100m freestyle, while Mercedes Abdallah takes on a packed schedule including the 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, and 200m individual medley.

For the boys, Tamba Akin Boamah is lined up for seven events - the 100m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 200m breaststroke, 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, and 200m IM.

Kelvin Abdallah will also feature in four events, the 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle, and 100m butterfly.

The African Youth Games will welcome young athletes aged 14–17 from across the continent, competing in 33 disciplines, with Ghana looking to make a strong impression in the pool.

Coach Charles Quartey is leading the six man boxing team of Ghana at the ongoing African Youth Games in Angola.

The Head trainer of the national youth boxing team, Black Rockets, Charles Quartey and assistant Joseph Martey will manage the 3 boys and 1 girl to compete for medals and qualify for the Dakar 2025 Youth Olympics qualification slots at the ongoing 2025 Africa Youth Games in Angola

Boxers on the trip are Margaret Owoo (Hitter) - Girls 48 kg, William Laryea - Boys 50 kg, Richardson Ofori - Boys 55 kg and Rahman Ablorh - Boys 60 kg.

Coach Charles Quartey who is always calling for the welfare of young boxers is positive that the boxers will excel, because they are skillful and talented.

He expressed that if the boxers are treated well they will give off their best. Boxing is one sport that Ghanaians always expect medals from at any international multi sports competition. The other sports Ghana is participating are Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Canoeing, Cycling, Fencing, Golf, Judo, Karate, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Taekwondo, and Weightlifting.

The junior national boxing team of Ghana is known as the Black Rockets while the females are called the Black Hitters.

President of Ghana Skate, Johnson Kwaku Gameli Kportufe has congratulated members of the new Greater Accra Regional executive who were outdoored at an impressive ceremony in Accra.

The executive is made up of Chairman: Clement Smith Danyagi, Vice Chairman: Chief Inspector Wisdom Quarshie, Secretary: Mr. Christian Kwaku Boakye Aidoo, Organiser: Prince Twumasi Addae, Deputy Organiser: Rachel Ankomah, Treasurer: Kwadino Kwarteng and Athletes Rep: Solomon Anim Owusu.

Mr. Kportufe who is Director of Communication of World Skate Africa hoped that the popular region will spearhead activities to make skating attractive and be loved by many people of Ghana.

He noted that skating has many categories and they must be able to organize events and competitions to showcase the various disciplines of skate.

“On behalf of the Executive Board of Ghana Skate, I extend our sincere congratulations on your inauguration today as the Greater Accra Regional Executive. This significant occasion is a testament to the confidence and trust that the people of Greater Accra have reposed in your leadership” he said.

“We commend your unwavering dedication to the growth, development, and promotion of Roller Sports. Together, we have established a solid foundation grounded in passion, collaboration, and excellence. It is with great optimism that I anticipate your continued commitment will propel Ghana Skate to even greater achievements” he expressed.

Mr. Gameli thanked the executives for their tireless efforts in advancing the collective mission and for inspiring the next generation of skaters.

Holy Dorgbetor And John Laryea In Grudge Fight To Determine Who Is Better In Featherweight Class

The Showdown on December 20, 2025 at the Legon University of Ghana (UG) Sports Stadium under the auspices of Legacy Rise Sports Promotions will feature some of the nation’s best boxers including Holy Dorgbetor who is the IBF Africa Featherweight Champion defending his title against John Abaja Laryea, former WBO Africa Featherweight Champion.

Many boxing fans believe that is the biggest fight of the night because they have respect for each other and consider themselves as best in the country and continent.

Both have got some international experience as Dorgbetor was in the UAE for the WBC Brand Prix while Laryea had a fight in the USA.

It is going to be a very serious fight with regards to image, prestige and bragging rights.

While Holy Dorgbetor is managed by Dr. Addae Amoako of the ACE Power fame, John Laryea is in the camp of Bronx Boxing Promotions and Baby Jet Promotions managed by Sammy Anim Addo.

Both boxers will come into the game with dedicated fans from Accra, the Volta Region and elsewhere.

In other bouts on the bill Ashaiman based Sampson Segbedzi will take on Ibrahim Diallo for the IBF International Junior Middleweight title.

Ibrahima Diallo, from Belgium is 12-0-2, while, Segbedzi, has a record of 10-0-0 and also holds the national and UBO Welterweight belts at 154 lbs.

Jonathan Tetteh comes up against Freezy Macbones for the African Light Heavyweight title, as Theophilus Allotey goes for the WBO Global super flyweight title against tough Asian Jayr Raquinel.

National champion Mohammed Abdula of Fit Square gym also fights for the West African Cruiserweight title against Eradajaye.

The main bout on the night is between Dan Azeez and Craig Richards in an international super heavyweight contest.

Aspiring Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation President Alhaji Dauda Fuseni has called for a rebranding of the sport and reorientation of the whole organization.

Speaking to coaches in a recent campaign trail, the current Vice President who is going for the ultimate leadership role expressed his sorrow over the dressing and kitting of the national team while they were going to represent the nation at the IBA Men’s World Championship in Dubai with no uniformed attire.

He noted that the GBA has memo of understanding with BoxUp, a kits manufacturing company who have committed to supply the Black Bombers with boxing equipment; gloves, boots, mouth pieces, shorts, bandages, head gears, trunks, punching bags, travelling bags etc.

He stated that appearance of the team and officials is very important in attracting corporate sponsorship and media partnership.

Incumbent Treasurer, Mustapha Nettey and Second Vice President Solomon Otoo respectively promised an open door administration if they are given the mandate again.

According to Nettey, spokesperson of the team, the Benard Quartey administration has not been transparent with the stakeholders, and want a new leadership with Nii Adama Addy aka Nii Gonti Adjor 1, owner of The Gym and former manager of Joseph Agbeko as the First Vice President.

He said Ghana always has potential to win medals in boxing, but motivation has been poor and doors for opportunities which should be open for boxers and trainers are closed.

“We promise to open all doors of opportunities for boxers, coaches and even media” he said.

The fourth edition of the annual Cartel Charity Health Walk was held last Friday with many people from all walks of life taking part.

The Walk started from the Mamprobi Post Office through some principal streets of Jamestown to Accra Central turning at the Independence Square at Osu and back through the GPO, Akotolante, Korle Bu, Korle Gonno to Mamprobi Girls School Park where the Stephen Appiah Astro Turf is situated.

The Walk attracted some former footballers like fitness enthusiast, Sam Johnson who played for the Black Stars and Accra Hearts of Oak. He said the programme is laudable and should be sustained and improved with other activities.

“You know I am a fitness fan, and I just love what my brother is doing. This is the fourth edition and I pray that the fifth edition will be more more massive. People have trained and exercised their bodies which is very good to keep us in god shape for long life” he expressed.

Sam Johnson is the CEO of Body Fitness Gym at Dansoman.

Joseph Tagoe, aka Bobby Short, a skilful player who played for Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics noted that the event is a tradition and must be maintained and celebrated every year in honor of Henry Owoo who also loves football and staunch fan of Accra Hearts of Oak.

He announced his Foundation football match at the Appiah Astro Turf on 20th December.

Randy Abossey, who is now into training young footballers, said the Cartel Charity Health Walk has come to stay and everyone should contribute by attending to make it a festival or carnival in future.

Ruben, a Rugby player expressed that the Cartel Charity Health Walk is more than a rally of well meaning people who are concerned about health. He commended the addition of free health screening and registration of National Health Insurance.

Others who are joining the Walk for the first time said the really enjoyed themselves as the exercise was good.

The Cartel Charity Health Walk was supported by a number of media houses.
