Africa's Voice To Be Heard At IPC Governing Board Elections

Accra, Ghana – September 2025 – The African Paralympic family is preparing to take an active, united stand in shaping the future of global para sport as the countdown begins to the 22nd International Paralympic Committee (IPC) General Assembly in Seoul, South Korea. On Saturday, 27 September 2025, elections will be held for the IPC Governing Board, a pivotal moment that will determine the direction of the movement for years to come.

Africa’s Voice, Africa’s Vision

Ahead of the elections, the African Paralympic Committee (AfPC), under the leadership of its President, Samson Deen, will host a virtual engagement session on Tuesday, 16 September 2025. This session will provide an unprecedented opportunity for African National Paralympic Committees (NPCs), the media, and sports stakeholders to directly engage with the two confirmed candidates for IPC President – Bae Dong Hyun and Andrew Parsons.

President Deen will anchor the dialogue, ensuring that the questions raised reflect the continent’s urgent needs and aspirations. “Africa will support a leader that speaks our language and delivers on promises that uplift our region,” Deen emphasized. “We will fact-check every commitment because the future of African para athletes depends on it.”

A Call for Inclusion and Practical Support

For too long, African athletes have been forced to travel thousands of miles to Europe, Asia, and the Americas in order to qualify for international competitions – often at enormous financial cost. The AfPC and its member committees are now calling for programs that:

  • Expand qualification opportunities within Africa, reducing the need for costly travel.
  • Build inclusive systems that empower athletes with disabilities across all regions of the continent.
  • Strengthen regional competitions, ensuring African athletes can showcase their talent on home soil.

Deen stressed that African governments, NPCs, and stakeholders are not asking for charity but for fairness, partnership, and recognition. “Unity and inclusion are not optional—they are the foundation of a stronger Paralympic Movement. Africa is ready to do its part, but we need leaders who believe in our potential,” he said.

African Conference in Seoul

In the final hours before the election, President Deen will convene an African Conference in Seoul on 26 September 2025, the eve of the IPC Congress. This strategic meeting will ensure that the African bloc goes into the vote aligned, informed, and united in purpose.

One Continent, One Voice

As Africa prepares for these decisive moments, the message from the AfPC is clear: the continent seeks a future where para athletes can dream, train, and succeed without barriers of geography, cost, or exclusion. By demanding accountability and supporting leaders who share this vision, Africa is stepping forward with confidence, courage, and unity.

Boxing fans sit in rain to watch as Baubali bows to the beast, Dickson

Ghanaian boxing fans sat in the drizzling in the early hours of Saturday to watch Jacob 'The Beast' Dickson, a former National Cruiserweight Champion destroy big mouth Ernest Akushey aka Baubali in an interesting boxing match dubbed Monaco, the night to prove at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

After the massive hype at densely populated places like Gbese, Bukom and Chorkor, the bout live up to its billing with both boxers dishing out a good performance and the fans cheered their idols .

Bronx Boxing Club presented most of the boxers featured by SEM Promotions with Hafiz Damba,  Abubakar Kamoko aka Ambitious Tilapia, Solomon Sampson. John 'Expensive' Laryea and Daniel Gorsh (The Emperor) registering sweet knock out victories.

Prisons officer Musah Lawson had to sweat before winning against Patrick Cudjoe of the Wisdom Boxing Gym for the National Super Welterweight title.

Kevin Abraham Carter of Fit Trip Gym also showed some skills and power to win by knockout.

Joseph Sackey also won to make his church members and family happy.

The13 bouts bill plus amateur and juvenile fights laced with entertainment was marvellous as Awel One Rasta, Tinku and the Sexy Ladies raised temperatures at the Arena.

Promoter Lord Eddie Coleman had great ideas to entertain boxing lovers however he needs to improve upon his act so that we can rate him in the ranks of Legacy Rise Sports. Bishop Promotions and Box Office.

The fight was well attended, but corporate Ghana must come in to support and sponsor because the people love the game, but

Sports Education and Management (SEM) Promotions cannot do it alone. They need assistance to organise better programmes.

They have to work on time management and strategic planning.

In general they tried and fans will look out for their next bill.

The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) deserve some commendation for ensuring strict adhering to protocols and effective but friendly security by the Military Police.

William Adom Nortey who displayed against ace rap star, Reggie Rockstone in a Mixed Martial Arts  (MMA) show says he is coming to the Bukom Boxing Arena on Friday September 19 to give fight fans another good show.

Speaking to Yours Truly in an exclusive interview he said MMA is the next big thing to happen to Ghana Sports and urged all fans to watch out and patronise the event.

The Global Warrior Championship next big fight is at the Bukom Boxing Arena and it is expected to be bigger and better.

According to Nortey who is fighting a Nigerian this time. MMA is safer than boxing that is why he is practising it, and hopes to take MMA to bigger places.

He thanked Jeff Taylor and the Ghana Mixed Martial Arts Federation for the support and opportunity.

"Because of MMA  now am popular and famous, he just give me money in town due to my performance.

Meanwhile preparations are underway for another fantastic show.

After the last event by Global Warrior,  it has opened the eyes of many people who now want to contribute.

Friday September 19 is another opportunity and the main bout is a Middleweight battle between Ghana's Emmanuel Lamptey and Ben Bazi of Nigeria.

However there would be other entertaining frays between tough fighters from Nigeria,  Cote d Voire and other countries.

Bernard Abbey aka 'Kenya' has challenged Alfred 'ShowTime' Lamptey, former WBC Youth Featherweight Champion to a Lightweight contest.

Speaking on his social media platform, Abbey  said he has admired Lamptey for a long time but now he wants to meet him in the ring and beat him because this is his time and era.

According to Abbey who is managed by Shiatse Management and Promotions he wants to offer Lamptey and fight fans something sweet because nobody knows what he can do, and he now wants to do it.

"I am ready, Lamptey can take all the money on the table but I will beat him" he said

He met Lamptey and told him in the face, but the former SWAG Award winner did not consider him serious and replied that he was moving forward and focused on bigger things.

"My name is ShowTime so I don't waste time on someone who doesn't have the boxing eye, am moving on, he is not rated in the high ranks, i believe he wants some hype" Lamptey stated.

However, the fight has generated public interest and supporters of both boxers have expressed interest in getting it done because boxing is what they do.

Alfred Lamptey (15-1-0) has held multiple titles and fought in countries like UAE and South Africa. He is managed by Alex Ntiamoah Boakye's Box Office and coached by Eben Adjei at the Black Panthers Gym.

Abbey (6-1-0) who was defeated in Georgia by their Olympic medalist believes he has gained the confidence and exposure to face a popular opponent. He trains steadily under Coach Augustus Dodoo.

Meanwhile, latest news is that Joseph Commey, the new National Lightweight Champion who is a gym mate of Lamptey has also called Abbey saying he has to face him before calling his senior, since Samuel Takyi is delaying.

President of the Ghana Football Association,  Kurt Okraku aka The Game Changer has commended telecom giant, MTN for their timely intervention to motivate the senior national team ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

According to Okraku the $2 million support for the Black Stars and other national teams has really inspired the players to give off their best to make it to the next World Cup to be hosted by USA, Mexico and Canada.

Other national teams benefiting from MTN are the Black Queens, Black Satellites and Black Starlets.

Mr. Kurt Okraku did not leave out others like KGL Foundation, Lele Rice, 5 Star, Goil and others who also support the Black Stars.

He said their support has gone a very long way to inspire the players, technical staff and management to navigate their ways to ensure a  smooth path to their goals.

Football has become very expensive and it needs great support from not only FIFA,  government and the FA, but corporate support.

The teams also need moral and spiritual protection and support.

The GFA President gave special thumbs up to all Ghanaians for the massive support that backed the Black Stars to pip Mali and he is very optimistic that they will win their last two games for a smooth qualification.

Ghana has participated in the FIFA World Cup since 2006 where they made it to the second round.

In 2010 in South Africa, the Black Stars reached the Quarter Finals. They were also in Brazil for the 2014 edition but was a fiasco as they did not impress, just like Qatar 2022 after missing Russia 2018.

For the 2026 edition,  it is serving like an eye opener because they have been at the tournament before and felt the competition, so they must know what to do right and best to be among the best four or go to the final and win.

With lucky Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare guarding the posts, the Black Stars are safe, however they need aggressive tackling defenders, creative dribbling and strong midfielders and forwards who can run and score goals.

Ghana is the eye and hope of Africa and the Stars must deliver.

Already, Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt have made it and it would be ideal for Africa to have a strong representation that is capable of winning the World Cup.

Ghana has taken another bold step in advancing women’s rugby with the official launch of Rugby Rising Play at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium on Friday, September 12, 2025. The initiative makes Ghana only the second African country to roll out this World Rugby-backed programme.

Opening a Pathway for Girls in Rugby

Rugby Rising Play is designed as a structured, 10-session pathway for teenage girls with no prior rugby experience. It introduces them to the sport in a safe and supportive environment, helping them build confidence, embrace teamwork, and develop the skills needed to progress to Tier 1 rugby.

Described as more than just a project, the launch was celebrated as a movement—one aimed at empowering girls, breaking social barriers, and shaping the future of women’s rugby across Africa. Around 30 young girls from 12 schools showcased the sport during the ceremony.

Calls for Investment in the Next Generation

Special Guest of Honour, Madam Veronica Commey, Deputy Director (Technical) of the National Sports Authority, hailed the initiative as “a groundbreaking initiative that seeks to transform the landscape of girls’ participation in sport in Ghana.”

She stressed the importance of supporting young girls, not only in rugby but in all sports, saying:

“When we invest in girls, we invest in the future. From grassroots to greatness, let us rise together through sport.”

Her remarks underscored the programme’s wider mission to nurture female athletes, coaches, administrators, and leaders for Ghana’s sporting future.

Celebrating Rugby’s Growth in Ghana

Former GRFU President, Mrs. Gifty Anna Myers, the first woman to lead the union, reflected on her early efforts to introduce rugby in Ghana back in 2003—a move initially met with doubt. She expressed delight at seeing the sport’s growth, urging young girls to take rugby seriously and seize the opportunities the game now offers.

She also highlighted Ghana’s milestone of hosting the first CAR North-West Africa Women’s 7s Tournament in Accra, which drew participation from Morocco, Tunisia, and other nations.

Guidance and Caution for Young Athletes

President of Women in Sports, Mrs. Joyce Mahama, encouraged girls to remain committed to their sporting journey while issuing a word of caution:

“Do not see sport merely as a chance to travel. Desperation could expose you to exploitation.”

She urged participants to stay focused, avoid dropping out, and bring their peers along to help rugby grow. Mrs. Mahama praised the GRFU’s partnership with World Rugby, noting how Ghanaian girls are already making a mark internationally.

A Long-Term Vision for Women’s Rugby

Ms. Rafatu Inusah, President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union, outlined the bigger picture. She spoke of a future where today’s players evolve into coaches, referees, administrators, and leaders within the sport.

She revealed that the project will also roll out teacher and volunteer training, safeguarding workshops, community sessions, regional festivals, and a national celebration of rugby for girls.

Closing her address, she offered an inspiring message directly to the participants:

“To the girls who will soon take to the field: this program is for you. We believe in your potential, and we are committed to giving you every opportunity to rise, shine, and lead safely through rugby.”

About Rugby Rising Play

Rugby Rising Play is part of World Rugby’s global initiative, Impact Beyond 2025, launched last month. The programme leverages the momentum of the upcoming Women’s Rugby World Cup in England to drive lasting change worldwide.

Through its three core pillars and nine strategic initiatives, Impact Beyond 2025 aims to inspire more women and girls to embrace rugby, not only as players but also as coaches, referees, and administrators.

In Ghana, Rugby Rising Play stands as both a challenge and an opportunity: to nurture the next generation of women who will carry the sport forward, building a legacy that stretches from grassroots fields to the global stage.

The Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), in partnership with World Rugby, will officially launch the Rugby Rising Play Project on Friday, 12th September 2025.

Rugby Rising Play is World Rugby’s first bespoke girls’ participation programme, specifically designed to recruit and retain more teenage girls in rugby.

The primary goal of the initiative is to create a clear pathway for girls to progress into Tier 1 rugby and other formats of the game.

It aims to equip them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to excel in the sport while promoting lifelong involvement.

Beyond rugby skills, the programme fosters a holistic learning environment that embodies the core values of the game: teamwork, discipline, respect, and integrity.

For the first time, teenage girls across Ghana will have access to a structured pathway into rugby, with 10 empowering sessions crafted to build confidence, unlock potential, and open doors to Tier 1 rugby and beyond.

The launch is scheduled for Friday, 12th September 2025, at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium.

This is more than just a programme; it is a movement. A bold step towards empowering young girls, breaking barriers, and shaping the future of rugby in Ghana and across Africa.

The future is female. The future is rugby. And it begins right here in Ghana.
