The 2024/2025 MTN FA Cup enters the most crucial stage this weekend at Tarkwa TnA Football Park which was specially selected to host the Semi Finals.

The semi-finals kick off on Saturday with an all-second division clash between Attram de Visser and Golden Kicks - two Accra based division one sides not popular in the Tarkwa area.

But the chairman of the FA Cup Committee Arthur says they have outlined strategic plans to keep spectators engaged.

“We all know that Golden Kicks led by Fiifi Parker Hanson and Attram de Visser are not well known in that area, and we know in football if you are not able to create a festival, people come to watch stars. If they don’t have stars, it becomes tricky. This is our strategy,” he explained.

“They have a very hot DJ who is well liked in Tarkwa. He will perform at the program. There are a lot of little surprises added,” Arthur noted.

Attram de Visser is owned by former national and Great Olympics star, Godwin Attram who is the trainer.

The MTN FA Cup competition is another contest among the coaches – the fans are watching their tactics, plans and strategies for all the four Semi Finalists.

On Sunday, Coach Zico’s Asante Kotoko will meet Samuel Buadu’s Berekum Chelsea in an epic show down, the match has drawn massive interest from across the Western region to Ashanti, Bono and beyond.

Wilson Arthur is confident the TnA Stadium will host a successful showcase of Ghanaian football.

He assured football fans of a well-organized and entertaining weekend.

Speaking to the media, Arthur revealed that all logistical and promotional preparations are complete ahead of the two high-stakes matches scheduled for Saturday, May 10, and Sunday, May 11, at the Tarkwa and Aboso Stadium (TnA Stadium).

“If you look at the fever building up, if you look at the radio stations there [Tarkwa] promoting the games, it is very, very positive. Thank God everything is in place,” he stated.

Arthur announced that organizers will host a food bazaar as part of the weekend’s events, coinciding with the celebration of Mother’s Day on Sunday.

“Sunday is Mother’s Day, we will be doing a food bazaar;,” he revealed. “We’ve also done a curtain raiser for two schools on Saturday. Because they have a lot of old students and that rivalry between them, they will come along with fans, and that will help patronage for day one.”

Black Stars and Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has received a brand-new car from Alhaji Seidu Agongo, CEO of Class Media Group, in recognition of his outstanding performances and the public attention sparked by a viral video earlier this year.

The presentation, which took place on Wednesday at the club’s commercial center, followed widespread social media attention after Asare was captured commuting in the front seat of a commercial bus popularly known as ‘trotro’ shortly after making his debut for the Black Stars in March.

The video drew both praise and concern, prompting calls for better treatment and support for local footballers.

Asare, visibly moved by the gesture, expressed his appreciation to the Hearts of Oak fan base and the wider football fraternity.

“I thank all the supporters of Hearts of Oak and everyone,” he said. “It is incredible for a lovely gesture to be extended to someone like me.”

Head coach Aboubakar Ouattara, who has overseen Asare’s transformation into the club’s first-choice shot-stopper, praised the player’s discipline and urged him to remain grounded.

“I’ll tell Asare to utilise the car well,” Ouattara said. “He should bear in mind it was as a result of his abilities on the pitch that earned him this prize.”

Asare has kept an impressive 15 clean sheets in 24 league games this season, helping Hearts of Oak maintain one of the tightest defences in the Ghana Premier League. His performances have also earned him a starting spot in the Black Stars, where he kept back-to-back clean sheets in World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.

The car gift serves as a symbol of public appreciation for local talent and has reignited conversations around player welfare and recognition in Ghana’s domestic football scene.

There was drama at the La Dade Kotopon Municipal Assembly (LADMA) in Accra on Tuesday as Assembly Members overwhelmingly rejected President John Dramani Mahama’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Alfredos Nii Anyetei. The rejection has sparked renewed calls for long-serving party stalwart and current Chief Whip of the Assembly, Aaron Akrong, to be nominated for the top job.

The event, which was attended by the Member of Parliament for the area and Deputy Minister of Local Government, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, and the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Ocloo, ended in disappointment for the President’s nominee. Mr. Anyetei polled only 5 votes out of 14—representing just 36 percent—falling well short of the two-thirds majority required for confirmation. With 9 Assembly Members voting “No,” the outcome leaves no room for a mandatory second vote, effectively disqualifying the nominee from being re-nominated.

The low turnout in favour of Mr. Anyetei, believed to include only the five government appointees, highlights strong internal resistance to his candidacy. The announcement of the results by the Electoral Commission was met with jubilation from party faithful and community members who sang revolutionary songs and hailed the verdict as a win for grassroots democracy.

Assembly Members and supporters accused key party figures of attempting to impose a candidate perceived to be out of touch with the constituency. Criticisms were directed at the MP, Hon. Odoley Sowah, for alleged arrogance, and at former MP Hon. Amasa Namoale—believed to be the nominee’s sponsor—who was accused of undermining the popular favourite, Aaron Akrong.

Some Assembly Members suggested that Mr. Anyetei’s nomination was a political favour intended to honour his late father, Magnus Anyetei Sowah, a former party chairman who was once tipped for the MCE role but never appointed. They argued that the younger Anyetei lacked the maturity and experience required for the position, and insisted that loyalty and long service should be rewarded.

Unconfirmed reports of financial inducement further inflamed tensions, with speculation that members were promised GH¢50,000 each to endorse the nominee but only received GH¢13,000—allegedly contributing to the backlash.

Calls for Aaron Akrong—affectionately known as “Ice Tee”—to be nominated have intensified. Widely regarded as a unifier and a workhorse within the party, Mr. Akrong has served the Assembly for nearly two decades and held the role of Chief Whip for over 12 years.

“This is the gentleman who worked tirelessly to bring the party to power. Why should he be sidelined? He has dedicated his entire political life to this constituency,” a supporter told the Daily Graphic.

Regional Minister Linda Ocloo, visibly dismayed by the outcome, expressed her disappointment. “It’s sad to see Assembly Members jubilating over the nominee’s rejection. This delays development,” she said. Despite the setback, she indicated that the government may re-present the nominee for a second attempt, though that path now appears politically untenable.

President Mahama now faces a tough decision: whether to re-nominate Alfred Anyetei or bow to the popular demand for Aaron Akrong to lead the La Dade Kotopon Municipal Assembly.

As the dust settles, one thing is clear—any future nominee must carry the confidence and endorsement of both the Assembly and the grassroots.

The Black Star Pearls (BSP) of Ghana, an interest group of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, initiated its first tree planting exercise in 2023 with students of Anani Memorial International School and other institutions as part of the sorority’s global “Enhancing the Environment” initiative.

In partnership with the Daughters of the Middle Passage (DMP) Foundation and Planet Waves Environmental NGO (PW), BSP members have already visited schools to engage students on the importance of protecting Mother Earth.

Founded in 1908 at Howard University, Washington, D.C., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is the first Black sorority in the United States, and its members have continued to uphold a legacy of service. The commemoration of this year’s Earth Day took place at the Aburi Botanical Gardens on 22 nd April 2025 in the Eastern Region, where students, environmental advocates, and key partners gathered for a meaningful environmental, social, and symbolic exercise of planting 108 coconut seedlings to mark the year Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded.

Dir. Christa Sanders (former head of Webster University Ghana) and Professor Delia Gillis led the campaign, stressing the need for sustainable practices and responsible environmental stewardship. Ms. Dzigbordi Kwaku Dosso, Vice President of BSP Ghana, coordinated the program and led implementation efforts. Other members and volunteers contributed significantly by distributing meals and reusable bags to the children present.

In support of the event, Mr. Prince Afari represented Dr. Isaac Danso, Director of the CSIR-Oil Palm Research Institute (OPRI), and delivered a practical session on how to properly plant, space, and maintain coconut seedlings to ensure healthy growth and fruit-bearing potential.

Describing it as a crop of immense versatility, he said that recent trends have elevated coconut as a health symbol.

According to the acting Curator of the Aburi Botanical Gardens, Richard Forson, the Gardens spanned 164 acres, including 30 acres developed and divided into various lawns with different species of trees.

In alignment with this year’s earth day global theme, "Our Power, Our Planet," calls upon each of us to harness our collective strength to transition towards renewable energy and a sustainable future.

Educating the next generation on planting techniques and environmental protection is a simple yet powerful statement. It is a reminder of our duty to the planet, that small acts, when done together, create waves of change promoting a tangible action that celebrates nature, instigate change for climate resilience while engages communities in global environmental protection.
