The 7-member committee tasked with investigating what led to the death of Nigerian Boxer after a fight at the Bukom Arena has submitted its final report to the Minister for Sport and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams on 16th May, 2025.

The committee, chaired by Ambassador Major (RTD) Amarkai Amarteifio, was inaugurated on April 8, 2025, and completed its work within the stipulated 21 day ultimatum.

Receiving the report, Hon. Kofi Adams praised the committee for the dedication and commitment to carry out its mandate.

He noted that the Ministry will look into the report and its recommendations and make it public after studying to help the boxing industry and to prevent such occurrences in the future.

He further stated that the recommendations will be implemented to ensure the total reform of boxing and other sporting disciplines.

On his part, the Chairman of the Committee, Ambassador Major RTD Amarkai Amarteifio indicated that the committee had successfully finished its work and was hopeful the report will tremendously reform the sport.

He further praised his committee members for a good work done and also thanked the health workers at korle Bu Teaching Hospital and all other persons whose contribution had helped to enrich the report.

The Garden City of Kumasi will shake to its foundations when son of the land, Stanley Nyantekyi goes for the UBO World title on August 29 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

According to his manager, Gordon Frimpong of the popular Osibor Management &Promotions, he will take on a very tough foreigner who is yet to be named. He said it will be the Ashanti Warrior’s biggest test, but they can never fail the people.

The Ashanti Warrior, Stanley Nyantakyi leads the pack as Ace Power Promotions in partnership with Osibor Boxing Promotions light up the Garden City with fight action on 29 August at Kumasi.

There are other exciting boxers on the hot bill like Moses Kwaku who has been signed by Ace Power Promotions and Samuel Martey aka Eagle Eye, Bovka, Prince Kamaldeen Mohammed fighting against worthy opponents.

Meanwhile the venue is yet to be named as the organisers of the bill are looking at many options.

Gordon Frimpong said it is going to be one of the best boxing promotions in the country.

The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has announced the formation of respective working committees for the organisation of the Golden Jubilee edition of its flagship annual awards.

The committees include the 50th SWAG Awards Planning Committee and the SWAG Awards Nominations committee.

The committees, according to a statement signed by the asso­ciation’s president, Mr Kwabena Yeboah, will play crucial roles in the planning of a memorable 50th anniversary of the prestigious SWAG Awards and identify out­standing sports performers.

The Planning Committee would be chaired by Mr Dickson Kyere Duah, a Member of Parliament for Berekum West and Bono Regional Vice Chairman of the SWAG.

Miss Rosalind Amoh, a Deputy Editor of the Daily Graphic, would also chair the SWAG Awards Nominations Committee.

Other members of the SWAG Awards Committee are Mr. Kwad­wo Baah Agyemang, former CEO of Ghana Digital Centre, Mr. Mau­rice Quansah, Sports Editor of Graphic Communications Group Limited, and Ms. Rosemary Mbro­ba Gaisie, formerly of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.

The rest are Ms. Veronica Com­mey, Deputy Director General of the National Sports Authority, Mr. Sammy Heywood Okine, a former Deputy SWAG General Secretary, Mr. William Dodzi Ezah, former SWAG General Secretary, Mr. Kenneth Odeng Adade, Deputy General Secretary of SWAG, and Mr. Charles Kwadwo Ntim of Homebase Media.

Expected to support Ms. Roslind Koramah Amoh, on the Awards Nomination Committee are Mr. Kyei Baffour representing SWAG Western and Western North, Bright Yeboah Taylor, Sports Statistician and Historian, and Ga­briel Obu, expert in least financed sports.

Others are Matilda Dimedo, Women’s football, Francis Ofori from the SWAG Secretariat, Prince Obiba Ayim Poakwa, SWAG Greater Accra, Davis Attuquaye Clottey, SWAG Volta/Oti, Pre­cious Sermevor, SWAG Bono/ Ahafo, John Kwasi Arthur, SWAG Central, and Francis Okyere, SWAG Eastern.

“We are thrilled to announce these committees as we prepare to celebrate 50 years of the SWAG Awards. Their dedication and expertise will be instrumental in making this anniversary celebration a memorable one.

“The members of both commit­tees bring a wealth of experience and knowledge in sports journal­ism, administration, and event planning. SWAG is confident that their collective efforts will result in a successful and impactful celebra­tion,” the statement indicated.

The IBF Africa featherweight champion who recently beat the Ukraine Champion at the WBC Boxing Grand Prix in Saudi Arabia is making effort to get closer to breaking into the world ratings proper.

His round of 16 opponent at the World Boxing Council (WBC) Boxing Grand Prix has been confirmed as undefeated Italy based Albanian Muhamet Qamili (15-0, 7 KOs) ahead of their clash for a place in the quarter finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on 20 June, 2025

The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has named a nine member committee to plan the next awards ceremony which is the 50th annual smooth running prestigious event in Ghana.

In a release sign by the hardworking General Secretary, Charles Osei Asibey aka Barrister said they are to plan the most spectacular and memorable programme come December or January next year.

The SWAG Awards is what every Ghanaian sports person looks up to after every season to know and celebrate the most outstanding sports performers, in both the country and abroad.

4 Garrison Officers Mess Tennis Club showcased its dominance over Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) Tennis Club over the weekend.
The home team, 4 Garrison Officers Mess, appears poised to redeem its lost image as the club outlasted GCB 7-4, winning the below 50s 4-2 and above 50s 3-2.
The friendly tennis tournament was supported by Infinix Mobile Ghana.
In the Men’s above 50 singles category, experienced coach and member of Officers Mess Joseph Acquah commenced with a 7-2 win over former Ghana Tennis Federation executive board member Paa Grant. GCB responded effectively as Mr. Boadi won 7-5 over Nana Attakora.
In the men’s below 50 category, Benjamin Fumi defeated Nana Sei 7-6(3). GCB Tennis Club responded again as Thomas Ohene Effeh outwitted Francis Akpese 7-6(2).
The men’s doubles commenced with above 50, with Joshua Mensah and Davis Sabah defeating Nii Adde and Kofi B 7-0. Joseph Acquah and his partner Kojo Frimpong continued 4 Garrison Officers Mess's winning streak with a 7-2 win over Paa Grant and Adu Baah. Dr. Osei and Boadi of GCB earned accolades from their members after defeating Nana Attakora and partner Nana Yaw Wallace 7-3.
In the men’s 50 years and below doubles, 4 Garrisons' Fumi partnered Ekwe to outshine Prince and Naa Sei 7-3. Tula and Akpese kept the home team momentum going as the pair outwitted Thomas and Raman 7-5. Kweku and George also added another to the visitors’ woes as the pair won 7-1 against Cyril and Kofi. Leo and Richard finished the day with a 7-4 win over Dr. AB and Samuel.
Speaking to the press, the President of 4 Garrison Officers Mess Tennis Club, Robert Tetteh, acknowledged the spirit of club members after the emphatic win over GCB Tennis Club. He added that in his first quarter as President, the club has been able to change the floodlights, which has increased the number of participants who play tennis in the evening.
According to the Ashanti Regional Branch manager of Infinix Mobile Ghana, Mr. Clifford Akuffu Amoani said sponsoring events like this is our corporate responsibility, and we believe our marriage with tennis will go a long way to help Infinix Ghana.

UBO Lightweight Champion Joseph Commey aka Jaguar has invited Samuel Takyi, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Bronze medalist to a Showdown with his title at stake.

Speaking to Yours Truly in an exclusive interview, Commey said he is ready and advised Takyi not to fight old boxers like former IBO Lightweight Champion Emmanuel Tagoe and Sheriff Quaye, the WBO Africa Lightweight Champion, but come out for a young blood like him to give the boxing people of Ghana a good memorable boxing show.

"I tell you if he doesn't beat me, he is not getting near the world title because we all want it and the best must face each other to determine who is the best of the best. We are boxers so we should let it happen, the people of Ghana want to see a good show" he said

Commey who won Silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Scotland said they have to fight to earn some income and Box Office Promotions is ever ready to stage.

He has two professional bouts and holds the UBO Continental Africa title.

Samuel Takyi is undefeated in seven professional bouts with the experience of international outings in Nigeria, South Africa and Ghana. He was named SWAG Sports Personality in 2021.

Both achieved and successful pugilists are supported by large crowds winning gold medalists at the 13th African Games held in Accra Ghana representing Ghana in different weight classes.

According to Jaguar, he can fit in Super Featherweight, Lightweight and Super Lightweight. He was voted Best Boxer at the last Boxing Ghana Awards in addition to Prospect of the Year by the UBO.

… Sports & Recreation Minister Urge GOC And Sports Federations To Work Together For Success

The newly elected Executive members of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) led by the President, Mr. Richard Akpokavie Esq. has paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams on 13th May, 2025, to formally introduce themselves to him and seek his blessings to succeed in their new roles.

Hon. Kofi Adams warmly welcomed the delegation and assured them of his support noting that sports is a big business which must not be left to government alone.

He expressed his excitement about the peaceful organisation of their elective congress and commended them for maintaining the image of the committee adding that the adoption of the Commonwealth Games Association as part of their mandate is a feather in their cap.

He noted that he would be very glad to see more women playing active roles in the GOC and urged women not to shy away from stepping forward to be elected as members of the GOC, he entreated.

The Minister advised the members to  uphold the virtue of team work saying " we will succeed only when we work together ".

In his remarks, the President of the GOC expressed his appreciation to the Minister for taking time off his busy schedule to be part of their elective Congress adding that, it was appropriate to pay homage to the Minister before they set out to work.

He further pledged the support of the entire membership of the GOC to the success of the sporting fraternity.

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) Board, led by its President, Mr. Richard Akpokavi paid a courtesy call on the Director General, Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah and his two Deputies Ms. Veronica Commey and Mr. Gideon Hammond of the National Sports Authority (NSA), on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.

Mr. Ampofo Ankrah warmly welcomed the GOC delegation to the headquarters of the NSA. In his opening remarks, he expressed appreciation for the visit and emphasized the importance of cooperation between key stakeholders in the sports sector. “We are happy to have you here,” he stated, reiterating the NSA’s commitment to fostering collaboration for the advancement of sports in Ghana.

In his response, Mr. Akpokavi stressed the importance of strong partnerships among the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, NSA, and the GOC in achieving their shared objectives during the current four-year term. “Success depends on joint effort and effective leadership,” he noted before introducing members of his board to the NSA leadership.

The NSA Director General commended Mr. Akpokavi for his inclusive leadership and recalled the unifying message of his campaign. “I followed your campaign closely and admired your message of togetherness,” he said. He further expressed confidence in the direction of Ghana’s sporting future, describing the current leadership as young, dynamic, and capable of transforming the sector. He emphasized the need for capacity building, continuous stakeholder engagement, and a shared vision for development.

Mr. Richard Akpokavi also highlighted the need for early and strategic planning in the sporting calendar, warning against the pitfalls of last-minute preparation. He called for a more proactive approach across all sporting disciplines. As part of efforts to build capacity within the sports fraternity, he announced an upcoming stakeholder training session for sports federations and extended an invitation to the NSA to participate actively.

He also raised critical points on infrastructure development, facility maintenance, and the need to optimize the use of existing sports facilities to benefit both athletes and the general public.

The DG announced that Ghana’s 4x100m relay team has successfully qualified for the 2025 Commonwealth Games in Tokyo. He used the opportunity to rally for broader support and best practices that would lead to similar successes in other sporting disciplines.

Concluding the visit, the GOC Secretary General, Mr. Mohammed Muniru Kassim expressed gratitude to the NSA Director General and his able Deputies for the warm reception and the productive engagement. He reaffirmed the GOC’s commitment to working closely with the NSA and other stakeholders to promote sports development in Ghana.
