To commemorate Ghana’s 68th Independence Anniversary, the National Celebrations Planning Committee (NCPC) has finalised activities for the period.

The planned activities are:

  1. Commemoration of the 28th February Crossroad Shooting Incident on Friday, February 28, 2025.
  2. Finals of a nationwide school quiz competition on Sunday, March 02, 2025.
  3. Finals of a nationwide debate competition on Tuesday, March 04, 2025.
  4. President’s School Children awards programme on Wednesday, March 05, 2025.
  5. Ceremonial parade at the forecourt of the Presidency on Thursday, March 06, 2025.

28TH FEBRUARY EVENT

Beginning this week, the Communications Subcommittee of the NCPC will roll out information and educational content for television, radio and social media ahead of the February 28 Wreath Laying Ceremony.

With this new approach, we hope to Reset the interest and participation of the youth and the general populace in the significant national event whilst remembering and honouring our heroes.

To this end:

  1. We will be sharing interesting historical content on the happenings leading up to the 28th February 1948 shooting of three (3) ex-servicemen.
  2. The Communications Subcommittee will host an X-space conversation on the ‘Changing face of Civil Protests in Ghana: Lessons from the past and present’.
  3. Radio, television, online and print media are encouraged to host and publish conversations to promote the anniversary theme and other activities to deepen public participation.
  4. The wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the Nationalism Park at 8 a.m. on February 28, 2025. The event will be broadcast live and streamed on multiple platforms.
  5. We encourage the media, bloggers and the public to actively participate by sharing information with your viewers, listeners and readers.

Ghana's Frema Agyfi who is based in the United Kingdom performed very well at the recent African Junior Judo Championship in Algeria, dubbed Algiers 2025.

She competed in the 57kg category and won the bronze medal to announce Ghana’s presence at the Algiers 2025 Junior African Cup.

According to Elkanah Dodoo, a popular Judo Coach, the event is an Olympics qualifier and she must be commended and supported by government and corporate bodies.

"Ghana has talent and all we need is funds to organise and compete at the international level to qualify for World and Olympic tournaments" he expressed.

Frema's parents were responsible for her registration and travel fares. She also feels government and the private sector must support sports, especially the least financed like judo.

She was handled by Coach Edward Stewart Greenhill who is also based in London at the Championship.

Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, has called on the media to help brand sports to make it attractive for sponsorship and development.

He said sports was a big industry and that the media played an important role in the growth and development of sports in the country.

The minister said these when the leadership of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) paid a courtesy call on him at his office on Wednesday to officially welcome him as the new ministerr for sports and recreation.

He said the vision of President John Mahama was to develop sports from the grassroots;; therefore,, there was going to be a lot of reforms to revive community sports and lead the charge to bring back school sports.

He added that although funding had been the major challenge in the industry, his ministry would find innovative ways to fill in the funding gap.

The minister, who also doubles as the Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency,, mentioned that he was openo criticism from the media but urged them to know when to criticise and when to motivate,, especially with the national sports teams.

He said open criticism would help him to do better as a minister and that his doors were openor continuous collaboration with the media for mutual benefits.

Mr. Kwabena Yeboah, President of SWAG and leader of the delegation, thanked the minister for welcoming the association and assured him of their support to make him succeed.

He said the association will work closely with the ministry to to build the brand and urged thee minister to be open and welcoming to the media,, as he had welcomed the leaders of the sports media fraternity.

He urged the minister to effectively collaborate with the various sporting disciplines but particularly make the 2026 World Cup a personal project to ensure Ghana’s participation.

Other executive members present werelyn Nsia-Asare, the Vice President; Charles Osei Asibey, Secretary-General; Kenneth Odeng Adade, Deputy Secretary-General; Mavis Amanor, Women’s Commissioner; Augustine Kwabena Ohene-Bampoe Brenya; Franklin Anane-Gymah; and Tilda Elinam Acorlor, Executive Board Members.

The delegation was welcomed to the ministry by Mr. William Kartey, Chief Director.

President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Mr. Abraham Kotei Neequaye believes National Flyweight Champion, Theophilus Allotey is among a few young boxers in Ghana who can become world champions in the near future.

Speaking  on Thursday at the weigh in for the bill dubbed ‘Blood, Sweat and Tears’ by Wisdom Boxing Promotions, he confirmed that the GBA has sanctioned the event which comes off at the Hathiramani Hall inside the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, February 28, 2025.

He assured of safety and security for everyone coming to watch.

According to President Neequaye, Theo Lopez is young and will be ripe very soon for Africa and the world at the pro level.

Dr. Coach Ofori Asare, chief trainer and CEO of Wisdom Boxing Gym agreed with the President’s assertion as he recalled the achievements of Allotey at the amateur level winning an African Olympic Qualifier medal and going through series of qualification for the Paris Olympic Games in Thailand and Italy as well as training tours in Cayman Islands and defeating opponents from different parts of the world.

He stressed that the GBA and government must try and support the idea of making Accra the boxing hub of Africa.

Theo Allotey who is undefeated in nine bouts faces experienced Nigerian Police Officer, Lukman Akinolugbade (8-3-1) alias ‘Upper Jesus’ in the main bout.

The Emmanuel Pappoe-Thompson Choral Music Festival is an annual event held in Accra, Ghana, to celebrate the life and works of the renowned Ghanaian composer and educationist, Emmanuel Pappoe-Thompson.

This year's festival, the 34th edition, is scheduled to take place on March 5 at the Center for National Culture (Arts Center) in Accra.¹ The event will feature performances by 10 choirs from various industries and churches in Accra, including the FireVibrators (GNFS), GHAPOHA Choir, and the Treasury Staff Choir.

The festival aims to promote indigenous chorale music, foster unity and patriotism among Ghanaians, and honor Pappoe-Thompson's contributions to Ghanaian music and culture.² Pappoe-Thompson is credited with writing the lyrics to Ghana's national anthem, among other notable works.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board (EB) today agreed to accept the resignation of IOC President Thomas Bach as an IOC Member, effective after 23 June 2025. This will be the day of the handover to the new IOC President, who will be elected on 20 March 2025 in Costa Navarino, Greece.

President Bach tendered his resignation this week to the IOC EB following his announcement at the IOC Session in Paris that he would not seek an extension to his presidency despite calls from IOC Members to do so.

Thomas Bach was elected on 10 September 2013, as the ninth President of the IOC. He was re-elected for a second four-year term on 10 March 2021.

Bach became an Olympic champion when he won a gold medal with his team in foil fencing at the Games of the XXI Olympiad in Montreal in 1976. In 2006, he was elected as the founding President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB).

Bach was an athletes’ representative at the XI Olympic Congress in Baden-Baden (1981) and a founding member of the IOC Athletes’ Commission. He was elected as an IOC Member in 1991, and as a member of the IOC Executive Board in 1996, and served as an IOC Vice-President for more than 10 years. He has also chaired several IOC commissions.
