Picture Ghanaian football icon Abedi Ayew Pele, seated on the floor, his captain’s armband proudly displayed—exuding the aura of a man about to deliver a footballing masterclass.

A three-time African Footballer of the Year and former Black Stars captain, Abedi Pele remains a symbol of Ghana’s sporting greatness. Now, he takes centre stage once again, this time leading PUMA’s latest campaign — an evocative tribute to Ghana’s national team jersey.

In a groundbreaking collaboration, PUMA teamed up with Ghanaian designer Jefferson Osei to unveil a visually striking campaign, “God Bless Our Homeland Ghana”, reimagining the Black Stars jersey to coincide with Ghana’s Independence Day celebrations last Thursday.

This was not just another sportswear unveiling—it was a cultural spectacle.

Spearheaded by the legendary Abedi Pele, the campaign featured a star-studded cast, including musicians Jackline Acheampong (Gyakie), Livingstone Etse Satekla (Stonebwoy), rapper Kelvin Boakye, Darryl Paa Kwesi Bannerman-Martin (Joey B), Samuel Ofei Ankra Badu, female footballer Patricia Nana Boakye of Ridge City FC and Abedi Pele’s model daughter, Imani Ayew.

But it was that striking image of Abedi Pele—seated, calm and commanding, with the captain’s armband proudly displayed—that resonated most.

It wasn’t just a pose; it was a symbol of leadership, resilience and the enduring legacy of a man who defined an era of Ghanaian football.

One of the campaign’s most striking visuals captured Abedi pulling a vintage white Mercedes-Benz W124 (V-Boot), with his ‘teammates’—Stonebwoy, Gyakie, Joey B and Imani—perched on the bonnet or seated inside the stationary car.

The image was not just playful nostalgia but a powerful nod to Ghana’s footballing journey, where teamwork, struggle and determination have defined the Black Stars’ rise on the global stage.

Jersey that tells a story

For this campaign, PUMA and Osei enlisted Ghanaian painter Daniel Alum Jasper to create a custom print for the home jersey.

The design is more than fabric—it is a visual tribute to Ghana’s cultural identity, inspired by the Gold Coast’s heritage.

It incorporates traditional Adinkra symbols representing unity, resilience and cooperation, seamlessly merging artistry with sport.

More than a fashion statement, the jersey’s intricate patterns pay homage to Ghana’s diverse ethnic groups —Ewe, Hausa, Asante, Fante, Dagbani and Ga — creating a kit that unites a nation under one flag.

On his Instagram page, Osei revealed the deeper purpose behind the project:

“My goal for this kit was to connect people from all Ghanaian ethnic tribes, both locally and in the diaspora—to bring back the love and unite the tribes as one.

My design was heavily influenced by conversations with the Black Stars players, my family and the local people, as well as Ghana’s current political climate. This kit embodies their shared desire for a more unified Ghana.”

The campaign also re-imagines the nostalgic schoolyard game ‘Counters Ball’, a childhood favourite in Ghana where bottle caps became makeshift footballs in playground tournaments.

This playful tribute captures the spirit of grassroots football—where many of Ghana’s greatest stars, including Pele, first honed their craft.

Evolution of jerseys

Gone are the days when football jerseys were just kits worn by players during matches. Globalisation and powerful branding have transformed them into lifestyle statements, crossing cultural and demographic boundaries.

Few brands understand this shift better than PUMA, Ghana’s official kit sponsor since 2005. Over the years, the German sportswear giant has redefined football fashion, designing apparel that not only supports the national team but also celebrates Ghanaian culture.

Beyond its traditional match-day kits, PUMA has launched fashion-forward collections, such as its ‘Football Culture Fanwear Collection’, producing T-shirts, track jackets and hoodies tailored for fans who embrace football as part of their daily identity.

However, this latest campaign is more than just another marketing exercise. It is a statement. A bold, artistic and deeply symbolic narrative and a seamless fusion of sport, culture and artistry.

This is more than a football jersey — it is a story woven into fabric, one that will stand the test of time.

By merging tradition with contemporary design, the German sportswear giant has once again proven that the most powerful brands do not just sell products—they sell stories. And this is a story worth telling.

Mr. Germain Naatey, Senior Manager (Brands &Communications, Marketing Services) at MTN Ghana has disclosed that the company believes in the power of football to inspire and transform lives, that is why we remain committed to investing in Ghanaian football.

Speaking at the balloting for the 2024/25 Quarter Final of the MTN FA Cup his expressed that their goal is to help create an ecosystem where young talents can thrive, where fans can engage more deeply with the game, and where Ghana’s football can continue to shine on the global stage.

“We call on all fans to troop to the various stadia during the quarter finals, Semis and the final match to support their teams and nurture the love for local football. MTN has a line up of surprises for fans who visit the stadia. Do not miss any match day because its going to be fun” he stressed.

He recalled that the MTN FA Cup journey has been an exciting one since it was launched in 2010.

It has lived up to the slogan “obiara nnye obiaa” because since the competition started in 2010/2011, smaller clubs have beaten bigger ones to lift the trophy.

He recollected flashbacks, when Nania FC beat premiere league giant Kumasi Asante’s Kotoko to win the first tournament, New Edubiase beat Ashgold in 2012 and Medeama FC beat Kotoko to lift the trophy in 2013. After two failed attempts, Kotoko lifted the trophy in 2014.

He said the clash between Medeama FC and Asante Kotoko was repeated in 2015 and Medeama made it as the only club to have clinched the trophy twice during MTN’s sponsorship of the FA Cup tournament.

“There have been several winners in the years following and I must say that the FA Cup tournament has contributed immensely to strengthening local Football Clubs and contributed to unearthing talents” he said.

He congratulated Nsoatreman FC, the winners of last year’s edition for their commitment and dedication that contributed to the success of competition and the Ghana Football Association as well as the FA Cup committee for effectively managing the tournament and making it one of the most competitive football tournaments in the country.

This year’s competition has been nothing short of thrilling, showcasing the exceptional skill, determination, and teamwork of our talented footballers.

The ballot produced interesting clashes as True Democracy will meet the winner of Kotoko versus Eleven Wise on Wednesday, March 12 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.. Berekum Chelsea faces Bechem United in an all Premier Division affair, while Attram De Viser clash with PAC Academy, and Karela United against giant killers, Golden Kick.

He urged all competing clubs to let the spirit of competition drive them to give off their best, and prayed that the fans will enjoy every moment of the journey.

Winner of the MTN FA Cup competition will represent Ghana in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Female Rugby players in Ghana celebrated the 2025 International Women’s Day with several activities at the beach in Accra.

They were engaged in clean up exercises and some sports like running, jumping and pulling. They also had some feelings of pillow fight which is one of the new sports introduced in Ghana.

According to Rafatu Inusah, Ghana Rugby Board Women's Representative, it was a great day for ladies not only coming together to play and have fun but to discuss the way forward for Women's Rugby in Ghana.

“Clearly, the women are really ready to push themselves and committed to a call. Even though it was a holiday, the committed ladies and for love of Rugby, made their way to come and play Rugby to celebrate WOMEN IN RUGBY,” Inusah said.

The President of African Women In Sports Association (AWISA) Mrs. Joyce Mahama has called for an end to violence in sports especially against women.

In a statement released to celebrate this year's 2025 International Women's Day, she vehemently condemned hooliganism and violence of all kinds in sports that affect women and children.

According to Mrs. Mahama, some acts of violence at the various stadia indirectly affect women and children, referring to the recent stabbing to death of top Kumasi Asante Kotoko fan, Mr. Kwasi Frimpong aka Nana Pooley whose demise has affected his  family, wife and six children plus the entire football fraternity in Ghana.

"I wish to add my voice that what happened at Nsoatre in a GPL football match between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman was not only primitive in this era when football or sports competitions are supposed to foster development, friendship, unity and love, but very criminal and pray that the assailants would be arrested to face the law, because Nana Pooley demands full justice" she said.

She recalled how a female referee Theresa Bremansu was brutally assaulted because she failed to add some extra time to the duration of a game.

Mrs. Mahama tasked the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to intensify their efforts in checking, monitoring and enforcing security and safety protocols at the various sports stadia, especially in the rural areas.

She expressed her joy that the Ghana Police has intended to offer Sports Policing as course to train its personnel.

She made a compassionate appeal to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and National Sports Authority as well as the Ghana Olympic Committee and National Paralympic Committee to encourage and adequately reward females especially the physically challenged who excel in their disciplines.

According to the President of AWISA and Women Sports Associations of Ghana (WOSPAG) she feels unhappy that Abigail Quartey who became Ghana's first female world champion in Boxing has not been recognized and honoured by the nation as a country that does not recognise its heroes is not worth dying for.

Mrs. Mahama urged more females to participate in sports as there is so much to be achieved. She was sad that the national boxing team were not allowed to take part in the IBA World Women’s Boxing Championship in Nis, Serbia.

She called on African sports women to work hard and also aspire for greatness and higher achievements.

On the upcoming 2025 African Women's Football Championship in Morocco, she prayed for a successful tournament and hoped that the best team will win.

She said Ghana has a good squad in the Black Queens and they should go out there to prove that they are among the best on the African continent

Concluding, she advised African women to take up leadership roles in sports as it is believed that what men can do, women can do better and this can change the fortunes of African Sports.

... Referee Shadrach Acquaye rans to protects his life

The much anticipated 'Shi Shii Shi' Fight Night organised by Power Punch and Legacy Rise Promotions which brought a very large crowd to the Bukom Boxing Arena to climax the celebrations of the 68th Independence Day of Ghana did not end well making boxing fans to ask questions.

Some of the issues bothering the minds of lovers of the game are timing for commencement of bouts, some start after 10pm, ending, sometimes after 5am like yesterday's show which had dignitaries like Sharaf Mahama, son of President John Mahama and top Nigeria musician, Patoranking in the house.

The number of fights on bills should be looked at, to cut it to maximum of ten or 15 fights and most importantly safety and security of everyone at the venue.

Yesterday for instance the referee for the main bout which stated after 4am was hit with a bottle thrown from the stands.

And experienced Referee Shadrach Aquaye who is Technical Director of the Ghana Boxing Authority had to climb down from the ring and never came back to save his precious life.

Fans had to leave by the Arena around 4.45am to 5am as the main bout between Henry Malm and Derrick Quaye ended abruptly.

The last bout featuring Daniel Gorsh could not come on, and it was a big blow to fans who had paid to watch the reigning in form WBO Africa Super Bantamweight Champion who is considered to be the current best boxer in Ghana.

Indeed the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) must answer why they have not learnt from previous incidents like the Ayitey Powers Promotions.

However on the show that the Arena was filled to the brim and overflowing with boxing enthusiasts, Faisal Abubakar retained his WBO Africa Super Lightweight title with a R4 TKO against Abdul Zugo.

Undefeated Kevin Abraham Carter (6-0) also got a taste of real action against ' Okada boy' Korle Collison who could not return after five rounds of excitement.

In the fight of the night, Cann Neequaye, son of the GBA President lost for the first time to Bukom boy Daniel Otoo in a split decision.

Basit 'Joker Boy' Adebayor from Nigeria also won on points against Ghana's Emmanuel Noi Mensah while rusty looking Jacob Dickson also carried the night.

Delali Miledzi was lucky to get a draw against an Ivorien Adama Kone.

Mawuli Folivi won the National Welterweight Championship to make his fans happy.

Kobina Amfo Kwakye from the Charles Quartey Boxing Foundation recorded the fastest knock out.

On a positive note, Coach Vincent Akai Nettey proved to be a very good trainer aiding Henry Malm aka 'Assassin Junior' to shut up all the noisy fans who had come to support Derrick Quaye aka 'Show Love'.

One observation was that the people love the game so they must be respected and given a good deal, because like the Minister of Sports and Recreation Hon Kofi Adams said "Boxing is a treasure of the people of Ghana and it must be protected well".

Yours Truly was assured of adequate security by the GBA President. Abraham Kotei Neequaye and again a bill could not end successfully. In fact it is a great worry for followers of the sport.

The Bukom Boxing Arena was filled over the capacity and that shows people really love the sport so there must be discipline and boxing must be organised well.
