.. Only Four Out Of 42 Newly Trained GBA Referee / Judges Are Active, Three Others Report Occasionally

It has been disclosed that only four out of 42 newly trained referee /judges of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) are very active and officiate sanctioned bouts.

The GBA course was held for two days at The Gym Boxing Club, Accra on Thursday, December 1st and Friday, December 2nd, 2022.

In an exclusive interview on 'The Big Fight Night' on Omashi TV, last Friday two of the very active ring officials expressed that they are passionate and desirous of achievement in the game so they are investing in themselves and hope they will reap massively in future as great world class referees.

Boxing Ghana Referee of the Year 2024, Nathaniel Neequaye Kotey, a marketing student at Methodist University as well as employee of Multichoice and David Nettey of Accra Technical University studying building technology told Yours Truly they want to become like best international referees and their mentors, the late J.A. Annan, known as the doyen of Ghana Boxing, experienced Roger Barnor, enterprising Erasmus Owoo and the famous Ataa Eddie Pappoe.

They revealed not eager for immediate success or getting traveling opportunities but contributing to the boxing industry to develop and be more attractive.

Kotey said he was motivated by the GBA President Abraham Neequaye who happens to be his uncle, while David Nettey took inspiration from his dad, Vincent Akai Nettey,  a national Black Bombers coach and head trainer at the Attoh Quarshie Boxing Club.

"Initially I was supporting in training of young boxers at the gym, and I decided to add refereeing when the opportunity came" he said.

Both are of the opinion that Ghana Boxing is not down or losing its attraction depending on the way one sees it.

However, to them there are many good young hot boxers who are ready to excel, however the issues may be with finance and equipment.

They called for more investment and sponsorship in boxing, because the sport has proved since 1960 Olympic Games that they can win laurels for the nation in amateur, while the professionals have produced 10 world champions.

Nettey was optimistic that Ghana can win another world title in the near future, while Kotey noted that the grassroots must be solidified to produce more quality juvenile and amateur boxers.

He commended the management of Wisdom Boxing Club where he had his practical and urged boxers to be disciplined if they want to make it to the top.

He also appealed to boxing fans to appreciate the role of ring officials because their utmost job is the ensure fairness and safety of the boxers.

Nettey advised boxing lovers, especially coaches to take time to study the rules to avoid instigating fans of unfair resolutions..

The two potentials who have decently officiated some big bouts took opportunity of the programme to educate boxing fans on some of the controversial decisions.

They wished their families, loved ones, boxing fans and admirers a happy new year.

Joseph “The Jaguar” Commey is an obvious pick as the 2024 Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) Prospect of the Year.

The 21-year-old Ghanaian was an outstanding amateur, and the entire boxing community in his country is expecting him to do great things in the professional ranks.

On November 24 at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, he made his paid debut against experienced and tough fellow countryman Richman Ashelley, and won the UBO Continental (Africa) Lightweight title in the process.

Only a select few boxers can go straight to championship level in their first pro bout, and Commey showed that he is one of those when he won by unanimous decision after a competitive fight.

The future looks bright for the young man, and there will undoubtedly be many more championship belts to come for him.

HONORABLE MENTION: Timur Bassitov (UBO Continental (Asia) Light Heavyweight champion), Martin Gruy (UBO International Middleweight champion), Davide Carpentieri (UBO Youth Lightweight champion), Riccardo Rizzi (UBO Continental (Asia) Super Welterweight champion), Alexandro Foglia (UBO Youth Super Bantamweight champion), Danylo Huncharuk (UBO East Europe Lightweight champion).

Ace boxing trainer, Lawrence Carl Lokko is not happy with media coverage and promotion of boxing in Ghana.

In an exclusive interview, he blamed the media, sports journalists especially for demotivating boxers and trainers, because some do not give right information and others do not promote boxing at all.

Carl Lokko who is CEO / Head Coach at the Bronx Boxing Club said even when the Sports Writers Association (SWAG) come up with their awards, there are only a few slots for boxing, meanwhile boxing is the only sport that has given the nation more genuine laurels and real achievements.

According to him the first African Olympic medalist was a Ghanaian, the late Clement Ike Quartey yet the media has not hyped him much for governments and the people to see and know his worth, until he died and Parliament was trying to praise him. He called for a monument in his remembrance and honour.

He said the SWAG just considers boxing, but not really reward or award boxers, coaches and boxing activities like football or even armwrestling.

He noted that the right things must be done for boxers to be motivated and inspire.

“We can’t do sports without the media, but in Ghana the leadership of the sports media is not helping us, they are rather killing us, how can you name best sportsmen and women without Abigail Quartey who has won a world title, in fact the first female to win a world title belt” he asked.

Carl Lokko said he is not happy with so many things and has been looking on. But it is time to voice out some of the mistakes.

He asked why no professional boxer has been named by SWAG last year and this year, yet they have best footballer and Ghana Football is at its lowest form and ranking at CAF and FIFA level. He was happy the Black Stars could not qualify for the next African cup and that should inform SWAG that the footballers are not trying.

“If we have not done anything at all we have some WBO African champions and they should be considered” he expressed.

“We are always glad to mention our past champions like D.K. Poison, Azumah Nelson, Ike Bazooka Quartey, Alfred Kotey, Joshua Clottey, Nana Yaw Konadu, Joseph Agbeko, Isaac Dogboe, Emmanuel Tagoe for what they have done.

Carl Lokko is Vice President of the United Boxing Coaches Association and an executive board member of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA).

He led Richard Commey to become IBF Lightweight champion of the world, and currently coaching potential world beaters like Sheriff Quaye, Jacob Laryea, John ‘Expensive Boxer’ Laryea, Daniel Gorsh, Abu Kamoko and Stanley Nyantekyi aka ‘Ashanti Warrior’.
