One boxing weight division that has created a lot of arguments and debates is the welterweight class.

On November 24, 2025, Sampson Segbezi 9-0 of Ashaiman won the national title after Isaac Commey of Chorkor was disqualified for head butting. Commey was also sanctioned by the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA).

After the bout, many contenders in the division have called on Segbedzi to defend against them.

Currently, Henry Malm 9-0 who represented Ghana at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games qualifiers and 2023 African Games is leading at Boxrec as the best welterweight, followed by title holder, Sampson Segbedzi at number two.

Taking the third position is Habib Kehinde Giwa, Maxwell Awuku is at fourth place, followed at fifth position by Fred Lawson, with Jessie Lartey at sixth positon.

The seventh position is occupied by Thompson Fosu, Philip Quartey at eighth and Abdul Aziz Quartey at ninth position.

Boxing fans are calling on a promoter to stage Sampson Segbedzi against Henry Malm to determine who is the true champion.

Amazing young power puncher, lightweight boxer Derrick Quaye, 6-0-1 is in the January 2025 list of the best ten pound for pound boxers in Ghana.

Quaye of Seconds Out Gym made big name for himself when he knocked out Michael Ansah aka One Bullet in an exciting bout staged by Box Office Promotions at the Bukom Boxing Arena, and has since become one of the boxers who can take Ghana Boxing to a high level.

However much congratulations must go to Daniel Selassi Gorsh who has been the leader of best pound for pound in the last three months, as well as John ‘Expensive Boxer’ Laryea, Stanley Nyantekyi aka Ashanti Warrior, Holy Dogbetoraka Jaw Breaker and Faisal ‘Poncho Power’ Abubakar who have maintained their positions in the top list. Others in the top ten are Seth Gyimah aka Freezy Macbones, Jacob Tetteh Laryea, ‘The Chorkor Fire’ and Sheriff Quaye aka One Time.

Boxing Ghana rates the boxers depending on their activeness, performance, discipline media appeal and commitment.

Boxing Ghana is a website with its CEO, Sammy Ofosuhene based in the USA and editorial board led by Yours Truly in Ghana. They also recognize and honour best boxers, coaches, referees, managers, promoters, media, match makers, fans, best bout and others for their contribution to boxing in Ghana.

Ahead of the 4th annual national Water Polo championships to be held at the University of Ghana pool on Saturday January 18, 2025, a referee’s clinic has been organized last Tuesday at the Lincoln Community School at Abelemkpe in Accra.

Croatia born and USA based Mr. Tom Tonka Karaman, an official from World Aquatics formerly known as FINA, conducted the successful clinic which attracted interested young players, coaches and officials.

He expressed his joy over the interest that people have for Water Polo though it is a new and expensive sports.

He commended the President of Ghana Water Polo Prince Asante Sefa Boakye who is also founder of the Black Star Water Polo team.

According to Mr. Karaman, Water Polo is an Olympic Sport under World Aquatics programmes and some of the benefits are as a sports person, learning how to swim and play in water and team work.

Other benefits that he mentioned are resilience, sportsmanship, leadership, discipline, courage, determination, travelling opportunities and winning spirit.

He urged the young referees to be neutral, make fair play their policy and respect all players and officials of the game.

He noted that Water Polo is an expensive sport however educational institutions like high schools and colleges with swimming pools can play.

Also communities with water bodies can also enjoy Water Polo.

The 4th national championship promises to be exciting as the players and teams are prepared to thrill.

Awutu Winton SHS are the defending champions and will face challenge from Accra Arts Center, KNUST and Lake Bodomtwi club.

Prince Asante Sefa Boakye said it is ideal that young Ghanaians choose sports that they can play to the Olympic level like Water Polo and called for the construction of more swimming pools in tertiary and secondary schools.

He thanked the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and the sports media for their support and promotion of Water Polo

The Heroes Supporters Group President has returned from Canada Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup

Mr. Alex Ahenfo said the working visit to Canada ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup was successful and hinted that the organisers are more than ready.

He called on Ghanaians to pray for the Black Stars to qualify as the tournament promises to be interesting and exciting.

He noted that it would be a serious disaster if Ghana is not at the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by USA, Mexico and Canada.

Mr..Ahenfo said the visit was very important and good as he held conferences on supporting national teams and directions for fans.

He expressed that Canada is going to host six matches at a stadium he visited and was impressed with the facilities and preparation so far..

“Definitely Ghana must be at the World Cup to represent Africa, despite the dismal performance of the Black Stars which has seen them miss AFCON 2025 in Morocco, we have the quality players so we have to showcase them” he said.

He stated that it is good there is change of leadership in Ghana and things are going to be better.

Media Officer of Heroes Ms. Wendy Naa Deide Sampah wished the Ghana Football Association and all the National teams, especially the female and disabled teams success in their qualifying matches.

Former Ken Harrison Babies, Heart of Lions, Accra Great Olympics, Accra Hearts of Oak and Aduana Star, Emmanuel Ansong has shared his experiences and some ideas on The Punchline on Omashi TV with Yours Truly. 

Also skipper of 2005 National U17 team, the Black Starlets, he called for prayers for the current Black Stars squad to come back to glory days. He also appealed for real attention on Colts Football and urged fans to keep coming to the stadium and watching football as they motivate and inspire players.

He commended Omashi Media for their diversity, creativity and innovation to bring on board Stars and Super Stars in the community..

In attendance was Coach Kola also a football agent and scout for top clubs in Africa.

After operating as the only and still best time keeper in Ghana Boxing for 47 years, Edward Addo, a retired former employee of the Ministry of Defence says it is time he is honoured by the boxing and sports fraternity.

"This is the first time I have been invited to a television studio and I am very grateful to Omashi TV,  The Big Fight Night, at times they call me on air for scores, but this is the first time I am live on air" he said.

Having joined the game as a referee, he changed roles to become a time keeper in the absence of one Brisco Addo who was in charge then, and it later became an important activity of his life attending all boxing matches.

"I have to concentrate throughout the bouts watching my time, the referee and the ring to always be accurate.

"The role is not rewarding but we sacrifice gor the development and promotion of Ghana Boxing" he expressed.

Mr. Edward Addo who works for both professional and amateur boxing said the allowance is not encouraging and his life is always in danger, but he always thanks the Almighty for his protection, mercy and grace.

He gives much credit to Mr. Teddy Lamptey formerly of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association for introducing him into the game which now loves so much.

The veteran ring official noted that Ghana Boxing is not declining but rather getting popularity and hoped a few problems with security and understanding of the business of Boxing would be solved.

He prayed that the new political administration in Ghana will invest in sports and pay attention to boxing because boxing has proved to be where Ghana can win medals at international competition like the Olympic and Commonwealth Games.

Addo is married with five kids. He loves Ga Kenkey and fried fish and his hobby is boxing. His favourite boxer is Ike Bazooka Quartey, with his favourite trainer as Vincent Akai Nettey of Attoh Quarshie Boxing Club.

Winner of the Boxing Ghana Boxing Media Personality and Photographer of the year 2024, Mohammed Agyeman Jr disclosed on The Big Fight Night on Omashi TV that he joined the Bronx Boxing Club as a trainee coach but has shifted focus to media production, using his phone to create all the magical media memories.

"I enjoy what am doing and it's a contribution to the development and promotion of Ghana Boxing, the promoters, managers and boxers need to be projected and I have found myself into it after admiring and observing people like General One of Friends of Boxing, Clyde Tetteh Narh, Mubarak Nanor aka America and Dornu's Corner" he expressed.

He apologised to Coach Carl Lokko for leaving his initial role to become a media person attached to boxing, and thanked some promoters and managers like Osibor, Currency, SP and Bronx Promotions for their support and motivation.

Agyeman Jr who is an Ashanti and Muslim was born in Accra and has learnt the language and culture of the Ga people, so he feels like a citizen of Jamestown.

He believes IboxTV360, the new boxing creativity outlet has more room for improvement and other opportunities will come by soon.

He dedicated his two Boxing Ghana Awards to all his friends and hoped to compete with established big media houses.

"I think the Awards is very good because it has increased my popularity and encouraged me to work harder as I can now see that people are observing what we do. I also thank Omashi TV for this opportunity" he stated.

He believes the boxing need huge financial support to expose boxers and get equipment.

He thanked all those who voted for him, and appealed to the media in Ghana to give much attention to boxing because it is very interesting sport..

National Welterweight Champion, Sampson Segbedzi has issued a strong warning to all contenders in his weight class in Ghana and Africa that he is ever ready to defend his belts, but they should come big with good offers and lucrative offers.

Speaking to Your Truly in an exclusive interview at The Gym in Accra, the Ashaiman budding hero said he is never afraid of any boxer, but the sport is dangerous so the stars need to be adequately rewarded for their efforts, skill and talent.

"I am very expensive and the titles were bought with good money. I have invested in my training and life as a boxer and I don't joke because it is big business for me and so the remuneration must be good. I am ready for any promoter who wants a good show" he said.

Sampson Segbedzi defeated Isaac Commey to become the National Champion. He also holds the UBO Africa Welterweight belt as well as PST Tanzania title.

He hails from Kpa kpa in Adidome, Volta Region and aims to become Africa and World Champion in the near future.

Backed by his unblemished record of 9-0'-0, he hopes to emulate his mentor, Floyd Mayweather and be remembered as one of Africa's best boxers.

He loves football and Christian Roland is his favourite footballer. He plays pool football at his free periods and loves music. Stonebowy is an inspiration because they all reside at Ashaiman.

Popularly called Mama's Boy, he never feels pampered but loves to crack hard nuts and venture the unknown.

He gives much appreciation to his coaches Nii Gonti Adjor 1 aka Nii Adama Addy and Laryea aka Lion for their superb guidance and tactical / technical support as well as his manager, Mr. Albert Ayeebo of Wintuma Enterprise

As first boxing champion of his hometown and Ashaiman, he feels honoured and thanked all the chiefs, elders and grannies of Adidome.

Segbedzi feels there must be reforms in Ghana Boxing with credible champions and ratings. He called for transparency and appreciative remuneration for boxers, trainers and other officials.

Award-winning dancehall musician Shatta Wale aka Charles Nii Armah Mensah has been crowned as king of Dancehall music in Ghana and Africa after performing at a major music concert in Jamaica. He was decorated with traditional cloth, beads and crown.

Shatta Wale received a thunderous welcome at the Kotoka International Airport on his return to Ghana after his historic performance on the bill that featured prominent Jamaican dancehall icons like Spice, Popcaan, Skilibeng, and Bounty Killer deliver electrifying performances.

Shatta Wale sang some of his most popular hits ‘Na God’ which the crowd was very familiar with.

The dancehall musician received a massive reception from numerous fans and traditional leaders, who converged to welcome and congratulate him on representing Ghana at the historic music concert.

Beaming with excitement as he answered questions and interviews from the media, he expressed his gratitude for their gesture, sharing intimate details of his recent journey to Jamaica.

He opened up about his electrifying performance alongside Vybz Kartel in anticipated for more collaboration and frequent visits to Jamaica. Kartel announced that Shatta Wale is the king in Africa.

The African Dancehall King was decorated with royal regalia by a chief of Teshie at the airport.

Mr. Emmanuel Nii Adjin Olla Williams, President of Ghana Tug of War and Pillow Fight Championship commended the traditional leaders as he had earlier proposed that the chiefs and people of Ga Adangbe should hounor him.

The former officer of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) in charge of youth development said Shatta Wale is very influential and can be a great ambassador for the youth of Ghana. He noted that people who love sports and entertainment cherish Shatta Wale a lot as he is their inspiration.
