Michael Nii Yarboi Annan (aka The DON) is sponsoring a group of talented athletes of Ghana Weightlifting Federation to compete in the African Junior and Senior qualification tournaments in Mauritius.

Michael Nii Yarboi Annan understands the challenges they faced such as limited resources, lack of funding, and the pressure of expectations.

He had seen their devotion firsthand, often visiting the gyms and training facilities to offer motivation and support. The day of departure arrived, the athletes gathered at the airport, their hearts racing with anticipation.

This is what the GWF had lacked over the years but today there is a man to provide that all in important support for our weightlifters.

Michael arrived with a warm smile, “Today, you are not just representing yourselves; you are representing Ghana,” he reminded them. This act of support will ignite a passion that will propel them forward, ensuring that the future of weightlifting in Ghana is bright and full of promise.

The MTN FA Cup Committee is adding some value and awareness to the game of football and the prestigious competition by taking the semifinals to Tarkwa, a mining town.

The TNA Stadium is also a new venue that befits the competition which involves all the premier, division one and two clubs.

The programme is also an adventure for the lower tier clubs who have not visited Tarkwa, and it is ideal having their match on a neutral ground as both Attram De Visser and Golden Kick use the Tuba Park in Accra.

Lighting at TNA Stadium cannot support double header, so the GFA and MTN are serving Golden Kicks against Attram De Visser on Saturday 10th May and on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 11 present the Berekum Chelsea versus Asante Kotoko.

Meanwhile, a consortium of local FM radio stations has been commissioned by MTN FA Cup Committee to promote the semifinals for record patronage.

Golden Kicks versus Attram De Visser scheduled for Saturday 10th May 4pm kick off will see classic exciting football.

And to boost patronage, Tarkwa SHS will clash with Fiaseman SHS in a curtain raiser from 2pm prompt. Students will stay on to watch the semifinal match.

The duel of the premier sides between Asante Kotoko and Berekum Chelsea will also be played from 4pm on May 11.

A Special surprise Mother’s Day Treat is planned to celebrate mothers who will be at the Stadium from 2pm -3pm, during the Happy Hour before the match.

History is going to be made with Ghana’s first Radio Syndicated live commentary GhSportsLive service in English and Akan that will be heard across the nation for fans who will not be at Tarkwa.

Fears that Glasgow 2026 might be the last-ever Commonwealth Games have been alleviated after seven nations lodged official expressions of interest to host in 2030 or 2034.

Scotland’s largest city stepped in last year with plans for a scaled-back Games next summer after the Australia state of Victoria withdrew for financial reasons.

Those proposed changes to the event – fewer sports, fewer athletes, and fewer venues have lessened the cost and enticed other potential hosts to look at future stagings.

Canada, India, Nigeria, plus two others have all publicly confirmed their interest in the centenary Games in 2030, while New Zealand are one of two nations looking at the 2034 edition.

In January, the 74 Commonwealth nations were invited to lodge notes of interest and the seven who responded positively – all from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania – will have the feasibility of their bids examined over the next five months.

It is expected that the hosts of the 2030 Games will be finalised in November.

Commonwealth Sport chief executive Katie Sadleir said: “We are thrilled with the incredible interest from four of our six regions.

“We cannot understate the hugely-significant role Scotland has played, having the foresight, tenacity and innovative thinking to step forward and host in 2026.

“We are confident that Glasgow’s pioneering example will increase the breadth of countries able to host the Games in the decades ahead.”

Phil Batty, chief executive of Glasgow 2026, said the news shows that next summer’s Games will be “a pivotal moment” in the event’s history.

“I have every confidence Glasgow 2026 will pioneer a new model for the major event – one that delivers a successful Games on time, on budget and with high-quality sport at the heart of the experience,” he added.-BBC
