Borussia Dortmund have closed in on first Bundesliga title for the first time since 2012 after a hard-fought win over Augsburg.
While major leagues in Europe have wrapped up the title race, the battle is far from over in the German topflight.
Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich are set for a dramatic final day showdown after a late twist in the title race.
After Laimer canceled out Serge Gnabry’s first-half opener, the Bavarians’ Bundesliga title hopes were dealt a heavy blow as they conceded two late penalties in the 76th and 86th minute.
After stumbling on the Bundesliga title race, Bayern Munich could have only returned to the top of the league if Borussia Dortmund had lost or drew against Augsburg on Sunday.
At the WWK ARENA, Borussia Dortmund did the needful; capitalized on Bayern Munich’s slump and climb to the top of the table with an emphatic 3-0 win over Augsburg.
There was a lot to play for going into the game. Augsburg fought hard through the first 45 minutes and ended the first half break goalless.
For the first time in over a decade Bayern Munich may end a Bundesliga season without a single trophy
But it was a rout in the second half. Sebastian Haller’s brace and Brandt’s stoppage-time strike secured all three points in the bag for the Bundesliga giants.
With the victory, Dortmund moved two points clear of Bayern Munich on the Bundesliga with 70 points.
The two-point gap on the top leaves the Bundesliga title battle finely poised ahead of final matchday on Saturday, 27 May.
Borussia Dortmund must defeat Mainz to end their 11 years wait for the Bundesliga if Bayern Munich defeat Koln.
With a superior goal difference, Bayern Munich can still be crowned champions if Borussia Dortmund draw Mainz while they snatch a win at RheinEnergieStadion.
Hence, the 2022/23 Bundesliga champions will be decided on the final matchweek.
Bayern Munich are the most successful team in Germany but may likely end the season without a trophy for the first time in over a decade.
The Bavarians were on a record breaking campaign this term. Having matched Borussia Monchengladbach’s record of 10 successive Bundesliga title last year, they were set to become the first team to win the title for 11 consecutive seasons.
On the other hand, Borussia Dortmund were eyeing their first Bundesliga title in over a decade. They last won the trophy in 2012.

Former IBF Welterweight Champions says the future is bleak
Former IBF Welterweight world champion, Joshua Clottey has stated unequivocally that the future of Ghana boxing does not look great following the recent development in the fraternity.
Ghana have failed to record a world title in recent years with the last one coming in 2019 when Richard Commey knocked out Russian Isa Chianev in round two to become the IBF Lightweight champion, a belt he lost months later.
The Ghana Boxing Authority are hoping to either produce a new champion or see a former champion win another title for the nation but Joshua Clottey thinks that vision is far from feasible given the treatment of promising amateur boxers.
The renowned boxer highlighted the dire situation faced by amateur fighters in relation to their development and preparation for major championships. Clottey emphasized that despite the potential they possess, these fighters are being neglected, resulting in their inability to secure victories in subsequent competitions.
“For now, to tell you the truth No. That’s the truth. Because amateur fighters are the future but when they go for the Commonwealth Games and even win medals no development plan and attention is given to them so they lose in the subsequent championships,” he told Adom TV.
Paul Dogbe reveals borrowing money for Isaac’s bouts, faces legal action
“For instance, there is just a single coach managing them and they don’t even arrive on time because of poor preparations. They sometimes arrive for competitions two days away and go for weighing the next day. Such preparations will result in winning nothing.”
“Because you need to arrive at least ten days to the competitions to be acclimatized to the system but it is not done.
“Meanwhile, if it was the Black Stars things would have been put in place for proper preparations through better sponsorships.”
