Borteyman Sports Complex Progressing Steadily – Can It Be Ready For The 13th African Games?

Ghana is building an amazing sports complex at Borteyman, which is behind east legon and around what is called 'school junction', which will be part of the infrastructure for the 13th African Games, Accra 2023 that will be held from the 8th of March to the 23rd of March 2024, featuring all 55 African Country's competing in 22 sports disciplines, what is being called the Olympic games of Africa! University of Ghana will host they other disciplines and construction is also ongoing positively.

This new sports complex at Borteyman, will have a world class certified aquatic Center with a main competition and warm up pools, 2 huge internationally certified multi purpose domes for indoor sports and certified world class tennis courts WITH a covered center court that seats a thousand people, so Ghana will be able to host major international competitions in Ghana.

There will also be an athletics oval and a football pitch and unlike other edifices when Country's host BIG sporting events, as part of the Presidents legacy, all this will be transformed into a University of Sport(not sports) for development(Google), the 2nd of its kind on the African continent with the only one in South Africa.

This center can also be used for international camping for Soccer clubs when their leagues end in preparation for the upcoming season amongst others......

The Local Organizing Committee(LOC) have been assured by the contractors that EVERYTHING will be completed and handed over by December 2023 so we will be able to test them between January and March 2024 before the games.

A 4 lane road has begun from school junction to the motorway, 9 kilometers of road and this will open up the entire area when completed, this is almost 67% done and those of you that have been there can testify to this fact. The Accra race course(turf) is also situated on that stretch so if you have property OR know anyone that does have in this area, Chale it's about to BLOW UP so take note!!!

The next step for the games between August and March next year is a HUGE PR AND BRAND AWARENESS campaign in Ghana and selected African Countries so EVERYONE gets to know Ghana is hosting the BIGGEST sporting event in Africa, the Olympic games of Africa, so help us God!

I would've loved to have been a fly around Nkrumahs era when he was using cement to do the motorway and all the other so called crazy things at the time that he did,  and what we are saying today about same edifices, fast forward 50 years!!!

FIFA's first female and non-European Secretary General, Fatma Samoura, will be concluding her role in December 2023

SEVILLE, Spain, August 3, 2023/ -- The World Football Summit (WFS) (www.WorldFootballSummit.com), the biggest platform dedicated to the football industry, and APO Group (www.APO-opa.com), the leading pan-African communications consultancy and press release distribution service, are proud to announce that FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura has been selected as the recipient of the inaugural World Football Summit Lifetime Achievement Award.

Samoura will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming World Football Summit event in Sevilla, Spain, scheduled for September 20-21. This recognition is in honor of her remarkable achievements and influence on the future of football, as well as her significant contributions to the global game through sustainable progress, innovative excellence, and societal impact.

Before making history as FIFA's first-ever African and female Secretary General, Senegal-born Fatma Samoura dedicated 21 years to United Nations projects. She will conclude (https://apo-opa.info/3Oo0sGu) her role in December 2023.

This marks the very first time anyone will receive the World Football Summit Lifetime Achievement Award, and the award ceremony promises to be a truly remarkable occasion, celebrating Fatma Samoura's exceptional contributions to football. Her work has enriched both the sport and society as a whole, highlighting the power of football as a catalyst for positive change.

“Fatma Samoura has placed an enormous effort into shaping the future of the football industry we need. We have witnessed that first-hand at World Football Summit, where she has also been a reliable advisor. We could not think of a better person to receive our first WFS Lifetime Achievement Award, and we hope it will inspire other upcoming leaders to follow in Fatma's footsteps,” said Jan Alessie, Co-Founder, and Director of World Football Summit.

"The World Football Summit Lifetime Achievement Award will not only celebrate Fatma's exceptional contributions to the football industry but also her role as a symbol of hope and empowerment for African women and girls. Her journey exemplifies the potential of African leaders to drive positive change on the global stage. She is an exceptional role model for Africa's daughters and an inspiring global leader," said Nicolas Pompigne-Mognard (www.Pompigne-Mognard.com), Founder, and Chairman of APO Group.

Good Day, Welcome to the Motherland

It feels good to be among sports people to deliberate and to decide what is best for our continent, Africa, and our individual countries.

You know Kenya used to produce long distance runners, but currently has the fastest man in Africa in Ferdinand Omanyala. Short distance events used to be the preserve of West Africa, Ghana and Nigeria used to produce the best sprinters.

I recall when Ghana beat Britain, Jamaica, Australia and others in the 4 x100 meters at the 1966  Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica, when we had the likes of B.K. Mends, Oko Addy, James Aryee Addy and Stanley Allotey.

The point I am making is that Kenya is doing something right, maybe they have the modern facilities or taking good care of their athletes, with good nutrition, coaching and motivation. We have to be particular about the health and safety of our athletes.

In March this year, I personally invited former World 100 meters record holder and champion, Jamaican Asafa Powell to come and inspire our young athletes. He was sad that we lacked some basic facilities in Accra, thank God the African Games will fix some of our problems.

I think this Summit is ideal and should be continued, I doff my hat off for the organisers for doing it successfully last year and here we are again.

I believe the future is very important and the future is in our youth, the rising stars. If we want to win Olympic Games and African Games medals we have to plan ahead and catch them young.

For close to 30 years, Ghana never won a medal at the Olympics, but in 2021 under my administration as President of the Ghana Olympic Committe (GOC) we went to Tokyo 2020 and brought home a bronze medal with a small team, in fact the only medal won by Africa in Boxing; because we monitored the athletes well and took the best who are young, capable of winning and can even go for a second Olympic.

It is not strange that our young Boxing Champion Samuel Takyi wants to have a second Olympic Games experience at Paris 2024.

Just recently, we participated in the African Beach Games in Morocco, with the least number in delegation and most youngest athletes, and won a medal in Teqball.

African athletes are very good, skilful and talented, but lack education, good nutrition and scientific technical training.

This is my worry and if we can address these issues as well as remuneration for local athletes, Africans can rub shoulders with the best from Europe, Asia or America.

It is a fact that almost all the top and best athletes in the world are Africans by way of their DNA, let Africa take advantage of that DNA fact (which is scientifically true) and create strong marketing brands and businesses for the continent.

I want to appeal to corporate Institutions to invest in sports, which is also a tool for advertising and marketing.

For the media, you are doing quite well, however you need to build your capacity to be abreast with modern trends in this era of social media.

As we host the 13th African Games in March next year. I hope to see most of you here again in Accra in the name and spirit of sports.

On behalf of the IOC, ANOCA and the Ghana Olympic Committee, I wish you all the best in your deliberations and a very successful summit.

Thank you

Ben Nunoo Mensah is President of the Ghana Olympic Committee

The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has marked its 55th anniversary as the umbrella for Sports Journalists in Ghana.

Formed on 3rd August 1968, by a group of clear sighted, perceptive, and gnostic brains, the association has grown to impact Ghana’s sports development and promotion.

A statement signed by Mr. Kwabena Yeboah, the association’s President, appreciated Mr. Joe Lartey, a veteran Sports Journalist and SWAG’s first President for his contributions over the years.

“As we celebrate the day, we pay tribute to our forebears; Oheneba Charles, Joe Aggrey, Ebo Quansah and Ackah Anthony who through their sweat and toil, sacrifice, self-denial, and relinquishment have brought the Association this far,” it said.

“I pray, as we celebrate the day, we are guided by the tenets of professionalism, virtuosity and adeptness, qualities our trail blazers gleefully exhibited.”

He congratulated all Sports Journalists and other key players who have contributed to the progress of the association since its inception.

The SWAG President urged all members of the association to be united and committed to help project sports in Ghana.

“On such an auspicious day, it is only proper that we offer acknowledgement to our Patrons who continually offer guidance and counselling to us.”

SWAG is popularly known for its awards scheme dubbed “SWAG Awards” which seeks to honour Sports men and women for their achievements.
