The Secretary General of the Ghana Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games Association Ghana Mohammed Muniru Esq.has welcomed the World Bowls delegation at an impressive launch ceremony at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday June 29, 2025.
He said it is historic and on record that Ghana is the first West African nation to join the World Bowls.
The World Bowls hierachy arrived in Ghana to a historic launch of the sport in West Africa.
The team in Ghana includes Brett O Riley World Bowls President, Sue Beatt Chairperson of Scottish Sports Association & Executive Board Member of World Bowls, James Owen World Para Bowls President and David Hamer Bowls South Africa President.
Lawyer Muniru urged the leadership in Ghana to be steadfast and resolute in administration to ensure that before other West African countries like Nigeria join, they are far advanced.
He noted that Ghanaians are very happy to welcome a new sport hoping that it will created employment and keep many people active and healthy.
"We welcome the Bowls Federation and promise to support them to participate in the 2026 Commonwealth Games" he said.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games to be hosted in Glasgow, Scotland will feature a streamlined program of 10 sports: athletics (including para-athletics), swimming (including para-swimming), artistic gymnastics, track cycling (including para-track cycling), netball, weightlifting (including para-powerlifting), boxing, judo, lawn bowls (including para-bowls), and 3x3 basketball (including 3x3 wheelchair basketball). Notably, some sports like hockey, badminton, and diving have been excluded.
