Mr. Jacob Zwennes, an America based Ghanaian boxing promoter and manager who made it possible for Theophilus Lopez Allotey and Daniel Selassie Gorsh to excite boxing fans at the Bukom Boxing Arena on the 'Battle of the Beasts' bill has congratulated both boxers for their classic performance.
The operator of Errol Hawk Sports Management confined in Yours Truly that he has been away from social media as much, but was interested in giving his ward, Daniel Gorsh a good opponent since he has not been getting quality opponents to defend his title and may be getting ring rust.
According to Mr. Zwennes, he presented Theo Allotey and his team the opportunity to fight for the WBO Africa title because he thought them as worthy and disciplined so he chose them as opponents and made the fight.
"I made it possible for them to annex the title and deserve the appreciation. I paid for all the WBO fees for both Allotey and Gorsh who I co-manage. Both fighters are excellent fighters with very bright futures. I have always known Allotey is good pedigree and that is why I chose him for this fight" he said.
"Both Gorsh and Allotey are well behaved fighters with charisma. I want to see Ghana boxing develop and thrive. I want to see the glory days of Ghana boxing come back. I knew this fight was a 50-50 fight but chose to stage it because I believe we need this caliber of fights to compete at the world level" he added.
"Congrats to Theo Allotey on the win. He deserved it. He was the better fighter on the night. Everyone who knows Gorsh, knows he was not himself. He battled with the weight and was drained for this fight. Also, the program for the event took a toll on Gorsh who had to make weight for the fight (Allotey is a Super Flyweight who was moving up in weight and didn't have to worry about making weight). For the promoters to have the official weigh-in at about 11:00 am and commence the public weigh-in at 9:30 pm was an excessive toll on Gorsh who had to stick around the venue for over 10 hours the eve of the fight. That was not right but it was the cards he was dealt for this event and had no options" he observed.
According to Mr. Zwennes, Gorsh was drained and out of his elements and was certainly not the Gorsh everyone in boxing know.
"For your information, we had a rematch clause in the contract, and we plan to invoke that rematch for later the year. We have given Legacy Rise Promotions the first right to stage this rematch but will exercise options if the need arises" he revealed.
"Once again, congratulations to Theo Allotey, an excellent boxer for winning the fight. I would like to see both fighters compete at full strength to make a definitive call on who the superior fighter is" he stressed.
Jacob Zwennes, a brother of Lawyer Peter Zwennes, former GBA President who has been involved in boxing for almost 50 noted that Ghana has very good boxers but there is more to be done by all stake holders to move forward in the right positive direction.
