… Mercy Werner steals show at 2023 MTN Invitational golf
Mercy Werner was at her golf playing best last Saturday at the 2023 MTN Invitational Tournament which took place at the Celebrity Golf Club at Sakumono in Accra.
She won the top prizes for her longest drive and closest to the pin and placed runner-up in the women’s group to go home with most prizes in nice crystal trophies and fantastic prizes from MTN Ghana.
Nadia Kwei - Sam won the Women’s Group, with Patricia Adusei Poku taking the second runner-up position.
In the Men’s Group B, Steve Yu Hai Yu was first, Benny Minus was second and Abdul Aziz Amankwah placed third.
The Men’s Group A first position went to Justice Modzifa, with Jack Yug Lin at second and Francis Amuzu taking the third spot.
Solomon Allotey won the Longest Drive for Men, while Dr. Amoako Mensah took the Men’s Closest to the pin.
Mr. Daniel Asare, Acting Business Chief Executive of MTN read a speech on behalf of the company and said they have achieved most of their set goals in the past 27 years.
He assured that the MTN will do more to lead in the telecommunication business.
He shared a few highlights on MTN Business, saying in line with Ambition 2025, strategy to lead digital solutions for Africa’s progress, they have cut the sod for a $25 million ICT Hub to develop an ICT ecosystem in health, agriculture and education.
“In line with our Ambition 2025 strategy to lead digital solutions for Africa’s progress, we cut the sod for a -$25 million ICT Hub to develop an ICT ecosystem in the areas of Health, Agriculture and Education through on-site and remote access delivery to facilitate skills development and job creation for the youth in Ghana. The project is being done in partnership with the Ministry of Communications and will be located at the Accra Digital Center. The Ghana ICT Hub is expected to be completed after 18 months when construction begins later this year.

Black Stars duo Kamaldeen Sulemana and Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer have pulled out of the Black Meteors squad for the 2023 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), according to reports.
The forwards were initially included in Ibrahim Tanko's provisional 29-man squad for the tournament, as Ghana aim to secure a place at next year's Olympic Games in Paris by finishing among the top three teams at the AFCON.
Kamaldeen and Ransford-Yeboah were among the three players from the Black Stars squad expected to join the Black Meteors after their involvement in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations match against Madagascar on Sunday, June 18.
The other player, Ernest Nuamah, was also set to join the U-23 team.
However, it has been revealed that Kamaldeen and Ransford-Yeboah will no longer be part of Tanko's side for the tournament in Morocco.

Black Stars goalkeeper Joseph "Jojo" Wollacott has completed a transfer move to Scottish Premier League for an undisclosed amount, GHANAsoccernet.com can confirm
The goalkeeper joins Hibs from English League One side Charlton Athletic after putting pen-to-paper on a three-year contract.
Straight off the back of being on international duty with the Black Stars, Jojo has joined up with Goalkeeping coach Stuart Garden and his teammates to prepare for the upcoming season.
Wollacott has recently been competing in the third and fourth tiers of English football for Swindon Town in the 2021-22 campaign and Charlton in the 2022-23 season.
He made 20 appearances for Charlton in the past season, where he suffered an injury that ruled him out of representing Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

"We’re delighted to bring Jojo to the Club, and I’m looking forward to working with him again.
"He’s a player I’ve known for some time, and it’s great to see that he’s starting to fulfil his potential. He now has over 100 games under his belt and has played on the international stage with Ghana.

The 26-year-old shot stopper has 11 international caps for the Black Stars.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is planning to meet Ghana legend, Asamoah Gyan in a bid to honour him in grand style following the announcement of his retirement.
The 37-year-old announced his retirement from professional football on Tuesday in Accra bringing to an end an illustrious career that saw him smash prestigious records.
The former Sunderland man ended his playing career as Ghana's all-time top scorer with 51 goals in 109 games while topping Africa's chart of most goals at the World Cup with six goals.
Responding to how the GFA plans to honour the former Black Stars captain, the General Secretary of the Association, Prosper Harrison Addo said they have plans to meet Gyan and proceed on a big plan to honour him publicly.
"He is a true legend. We have congratulated him and he deserves all the accolades for what he has done for all of us in terms of the development of the game and the wonderful memories he has given us over the years," he told Asempa FM
"However, in terms of what we have to do to celebrate him, we would have to take our time and plan together with him so that it can be done in grand style. So we will engage him and come out."

Ghanaian defender Jeremie Frimpong has been named as Bayer Leverkusen Player of the Season after a stellar campaign.
The Dutch-born Ghanaian pulled 30.7% of the votes cast to win the prestigious award. Frimpong beat off competition from Florian Wirtz and Robert Andrich for the top award.
The 22-year-old was impressive in the just-ended season for the Bundesliga outfit, scoring 9 goals and providing 11 assists.
He emerged as a club’s second top scorer at the end of the 2022/23 football season. Only Moussa Diaby scored more goals than the Dutch-Ghanaian.
He was played a huge role when the club reached the semifinals of the Europa League.

Ghana Table Tennis top female player, Bernice Borquaye is among 32 outstanding sports personalities to be honoured at this year's 9th Women In Sports Association (WISA) Achievers Awards slated for Saturday, September 23, 2023 at the Press Center, Accra Sports Stadium, Osu.
The Ghana Navy Officer who also plays for the National team, Black Loopers said she was very happy on receiving a call from the organisers of the inspirational award.
She urged girls doing sports not to give up till they achieve their dreams.
According to Madam Gloria Commodore, President of WISA, they monitored the exploits of Bernice during the West African Table Tennis Championship where she displayed marvelously to contribute to her team’s success, Ghana to win the Silver Medals after Nigeria took the Gold and Ivory Coast settled for Bronze.
Indeed, Bernice Borquaye was a delight to watch at the Championship which took place at the Trust Sports Emporium, she also enjoy some home support from family and friends hailing from Korle Gonno.
Madam Commodore revealed that the full list which will be out soon include coaches, boxers, footballers, track and field, para athletes and organizations.
She appealed to companies to support WISA who have taken upon themselves the responsibility to encourage and motivate sports girls and women by recognition, publicity and awards.
She mentioned Ghandour Cosmetics and the National Sports Authority for their assistance and contributions as well as the media.
She expressed that as Ghana prepares to host the 13th African Games, there is the need to motivate the athletes.

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has in a press release dated June 23, 2023, have extended their best wishes to the Black Meteors of Ghana, ahead of the 2023 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The U-23 AFCON serves as the final qualification event in order to secure a place in men’s football at the Olympic Games.
Ghana is seeking to make an appearance in men’s football for the first time since 2004.
In the release, the President of the GOC, Ben Nunoo Mensah said he is solidly behind the team in their quest to book a place in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
“On behalf of the Board, Executives and Sports Federation Heads, I wish you all the luck to break the jinx that has denied football an appearance in almost two decades”.
The Black Meteors are in group A alongside host nations Morocco, Congo and Guinea. The team will begin their campaign against Congo on Sunday, June 25, 2023.
The finalists and third-place playoff winner of this tournament will qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympic men’s football tournament in Paris while the 4th-placed team will play the AFC- CAF playoff to decide the final slot at the Olympics.
