Hot favourite Kojo Barnni lived up to expectations when he won the 2025 Goldfields Damang Open Golf Tournament last Friday.

He took over the leadership on day two of the competition and played very good golf on his familiar and favourite course which many golfers described as difficult.

Barnni who had won three previous tournaments at Damang admitted that though the course is tricky and tough, so he had to play wisely.

He took home 60,000ghc, Lucky Ayisah winner of last year's Genser tournament placed second and pocketed 35,000ghc, while Maxwell Owusu Bonsu and Vincent Cofie who tied for the third.place shared 34,000ghc.

Veteran Emos Koblah won the seniors category and took home 30,000ghc, he was followed by E. K .Osei who took 20,000ghc, while third placed Anthony Gbenyo got

The professional ladies segment was also keenly contested with Senegalese Oumy Diaye beating South African M. Zethu who took the second position while Ivorien Vivian Kouame placed third. They also took home handsome cash prizes of 25,000ghc, 17,000ghc and 13,000ghc respectively.

Vice President of the PGA Ghana Alhaji Ahmed Padori thanked all who contributed to the successful event, including the course managers, catering services and media.

He said plans are advanced to take golf to the schools and encourage more girls to play.

Mr. Hans De Beer, President of the PGA commended Goldfields Ghana and Ibrahim Mahama's Engineers and Planners for their sponsorship.

He urged the golfers to keep competing for  another Tiger Woods to be produced.

"You need more tournaments to improve and reach the world" he said.

He noted that the vision of the PGA is to organise more open invitational tournaments for all professional golf players.

He acknowledged past presidents who have steered the PGA over the last 50 years in Ghana, and announced that the Genser tournament and AGM will come on very soon in Kumasi.

Lady Captain Felicity Geabour appealed for support for female golfers

Mr. Sampson Arthur, Operations Manager of Goldfields also congratulated the players and winners. He was also glad for a successful tournament.

Breaking’s inclusion as an Olympic sport at Paris 2024, where 32 athletes competed in gender-based medal events, has significantly elevated the profile of competitions like Afrobreak across Africa.

The sport, which originated in the Bronx during the 1970s as part of hip-hop culture, has transformed from underground street dance into internationally recognized athletic competition.

“It is a pride and honour to represent your country, so all the contestants want to make names and history for themselves and the nation,” Okai explained. “I wish them well and may the best and most prepared win, good luck to everyone.”

The Afrobreak concept has expanded beyond Ghana’s borders, recently featuring in international events including the Africa Hip Hop Connexion championship in Montpellier, France, as part of cultural diplomacy initiatives. This international recognition has strengthened Ghana’s position within Africa’s growing breaking community.

Afrobreak Africa Final 2025 will feature participants from Ghana,Nigeria, Togo, DR Congo, Uganda , Algeria, Ivory Coast , Gabon, Burkina Faso, Guinea Conakry with Defending Champions Smith from Benin and Courtnea Paul from South Africa.

The sport’s athletic demands combine strength, flexibility, creativity, and musical interpretation, requiring months of dedicated training.

Saturday’s competition will showcase these elements as Ghana’s breaking community continues building toward international recognition and potential Olympic representation.

Spectators can expect dynamic performances featuring signature breaking elements including toprock, footwork, power moves, and freezes, all judged on technical skill, creativity, and battle performance. The championship continues to serve as Ghana’s primary platform for identifying and developing breaking talent.

President of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Ghana, Mr. Hans De Beer has commended Goldfields Ghana for coming back to support professional golfers.

In an exclusive interview at Damang during the 4 day open, he expressed that Goldfields had been a backbone of the PGA until they went out for a short period, however he is glad that they are back and can be looked upon for sponsorship in the next years to come.

"We thank Goldfields and really appreciate their support, we look forward for another deal for the coming five years" he said.

He welcomed the participation of nationals from other parts of Africa coming to feel the greens of the Damang course.

This year's tournament saw golfers from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Togo, Cote d'ivoire,  Nigeria and Senegal competing with their Ghanaian counterparts on the unpredictable and difficult course.

He described the performance of the golfers as stunning; however professional golf can be enhanced in Ghana.

According to him, professional golf has improved in Africa and it is good for players to move out to compete.

On the performance of the players, he noted that the course is a difficult one to play on but three times winner, Kojo Barnni has proved to be the master of the course, while other golfers have improved the quality of play over the past five to ten years.

He however missed Vincent Torgah who he described as number one in Ghana, but was out engaged in another international tournament.

According to Mr. De Beer the PGA which was founded in 1975 is 50 years and in December they will organise a special tournament to celebrate their golden Jubilee.

He revealed that past leaders of the PGA would be remembered and honoured as part of the celebrations.

This year's tournament which is the eleventh at Damang attracted 13 female professionals, including four Ghanaians. A total of 72 golfers competed from Tuesday 11th to 14th November.

 Experienced golfer Emos Koblah displayed tenacity and accuracy in his play to retain his enviable title in the seniors category of the 2025 Damang Open Tournament on Thursday.

The veteran golfer popularly called 'Godfather' exhibited his swinging and chipping skills in the greens across the hazards and dense trees, bunkers and bridges to beat his opponents by amassing 219 from Tuesday to Thursday to win the exciting competition.

On day one he got 73, 71 on day two and 75 on day three to defeat a field of 13 other good golfers.

He was followed by E. K. Osei who got 227 from 77 on the first day, 61 on the second day and 89 on the third day while .Anthony Gbenyo the second runner up in the category got a total of 228 representing 74 on his first day, 78 on the second day and 76 on his third day.

After the game, Emos Koblah told journalists that the nature of the course made play tricky and difficult, but he used his rich experience to beat the field to become seniors champion at Damang again.

"This Damang course is very tricky as the grass can stop the ball or make it go further than you wanted.

He hailed the young men who are now playing in the seniors division for giving him some challenging moments and Goldfields Damang for bringing back the PGA Open.

 Mr. Archiebald NII Martei Armah, proprietor of Prince De Henry Educational Complex Lartebiokoshie in Accra has offered the son of the late Bahubali, Nii Kwei Kumah Akushey free education when he attains school going age.

The popular preparatory school has produced brilliant boxers like Africanus Neequaye, Micheal Abban, Samuel Plange and Prince The Buzz Larbie.

Bahubali lost his life on September 23 a few days after fighting with former cruiserweight champion Jacob Dickson at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

The people of Chorkor have vowed to give their hero a fitting burial.

The late popular jovial boxer, Ernest Akushey aka Bahubali has been fixed for December 5 (wake keeping)  6 (burial) and 7 (gbonyo party) at Chorkor Tea Garden.

Promoter of his last bout Mr. Eddie Coleman of SEM Promotions confirmed to Yours Truly in a chat over the weekend.

According to Coleman, the late Bahubali may not be the best or most exciting boxer, but he has proved to be one of the most admired boxers and he must be honoured with fitting burial.

He advised and cautioned all mourners to behave themselves well at the funeral as he expects a huge attendance.

Already, three massive health walks have been organised in his memory and he anticipates a mass gathering at the funeral.

Home boy, Kojo Barnni and Francis Torgah are leading on the second day of the ongoing 2025 PGA Golf Tournament at Damang in the Western Region. They have taken over from E. K. Owusu in a tie.

The three times winner of the prestigious tournament, Barnni told media men after playing that he is not taking the tournament easy because every player has prepared very well before coming and he is not taking any chances.

The runner up at the Damang course last two years said nothing has changed, but golfers have trained well and anyone can win.

He said the PGA tournament has always been attractive and golfers from other African countries are interested in coming to Ghana.

In 2023 he was shocked by Nigerian Sunday Olapade, so this time he is very focused and determined not to make many mistakes.

"It is not easy, the course is tough and the competition is keen, the course is challenging, it is not easy" he told Your Truly in an exclusive chat.

Quizzed if the course knows him, he smiled and said it is not true, it is a game, and everything depends on the way you play, while luck can also play a part

He prayed for a successful tournament and thanked Goldfields Ghana for giving golfers another opportunity.

69. K. Owusu led on the first day of the competition with a score of 69.

At stake is 60,000ghc for the winner plus a jacket and the bragging rights.

The ongoing PGA Ghana 2025 Goldfields Damang Open Tournament in the Western Region is producing some exciting moments and wonderful displays by the 13 female golfers.

On the opening day the players were skeptical as they were not familiar with the course. but day two was good for some players, especially those coming from outside.

Yours Truly had some interviews with some of the players and they had different views on the competition.

South African Myeki Zerthu who had been in Ghana before but first time in Damang said it was not easy flying for several hours to come and play.

"It is not easy, it has been challenging but we keep going. I didn't know the players I was coming to meet, but I had to come and compete and the nature of the course was a bit difficult to play, but that is the game and we hope for better performance to qualify among the best players"

Senegalese Oumy Dieye said it has been good so far and she hopes to be among the top players. "So far, so good, I hope to do well and get a good position.

Arumona Nkechi from Nigeria said she had a bad day because she did not play as she expected and hopes to come back better on day three.

Ghana's Constance Awuni from Kumasi said it has been good and she hopes to place in a good position by the end of the tournament.

Diouf Diouma of Senegal leads the competition after day two and has been rated among the favourites.

One observation was that the female players want sponsorship so that they can always show up to compete.
