WBO Africa Featherweight Champion, John Abaja Laryea has received special branded boxing equipment from his mamagement team at an impressive ceremony at the Bronx Gym on Thursday.

The Ccustomized boxing training equipment from multiple award winning boxing manager, Mr. Peter Kahn was presented by Pastor Henry and Ohene Ameyaw, co manager of the WBO titlist.

Mr. Sammy Anim Addo CEO of the Bronx Boxing Promotions said as Laryea moves to a different phase of his career it is important that he is encouraged and motivated. He thanked Mr. Kahn

He said John Laryea also known as ‘The Expensive Boxer’ has been the African champion of WBO for some time and now rated at number 14, but his managers want him to move closer to the world title, hence they have arranged an opportunity to train and possibly have a fight in the USA.

According to Mr. Anim Addo, boxing is a very dicey sport as things can change within seconds and wants Laryea to know the culture and temperature of the US before undertaking any major fight.

Coach Carl Lokko supported the idea of moving Laryea to the United States where he will train with journeymen and rated boxers.

“It would be an exciting moment for Abaja to be in the USA, we are looking towards it” he said.

Mr. Ohene Ameyaw, co manager of Laryea said experience is the best teacher, and hopes the WBO Africa king will learn more in the USA.

He noted that Ghana winning seven medals in boxing at the African Games has revived the sport in the Bukom, James Town area in Accra.

North African nation, Egypt has been chosen to host the next, 14^th African Games.

The symbolic handing over of the African Union flag was done at the closing ceremony of the 13^th edition of the African Games which was successfully took place in Accra, Ghana.

Hon. Mustapha Ussif, the Youth & Sports Minister of Ghana handed over the flag to the African Union (AU) Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, Minata Samate Cessouma, who then presented it to the Egyptian Minister of Youth & Sports, Ashraf Sobhy.

Ghana hosted the African Games for the first time since its inception in 1965.

This is the second time that Egypt will host the quadrillion sports festival.

Egypt placed first at Accra 2023 with a total of 187 medals (99 gold, 46 silver and 42 bronze).

Ghana placed sixth with 68 medals (19 gold, 269 silver and 20 bronze), making the sports authorities and Ghanaians happy, hoping to reach the top three in the next edition.

In his parting address, President Akufo-Addo expressed his pride and gratitude, emphasizing on how the event provided an opportunity to strengthen bonds and socio-economic relations between African countries.

The President extolled the high level of performance by the over 5,000 athletes and the dedication of officials and volunteers involved in the games.

"These games embodied the true spirit of African diversity, unity, and our common purpose of promoting our continent," he said.

"The outstanding performances, display of sportsmanship, and competition that produced personal bests, national records, and competition records will undoubtedly inspire upcoming athletes to aim even higher," the President added.

President Akufo-Addo articulated his delight that despite challenges, Ghana was able to provide world-class sporting facilities. He mentioned the construction and rehabilitation of facilities such as the Borteyman Sports Complex, University of Ghana Stadium, Theodosia Okoh Stadium, Achimota Cricket Oval and Bukom Boxing Arena, as proof of Ghana's commitment to sports development.

He was confident that the facilities would be maintained and serve as venues for training future champions and hosting local and international tournaments, as well as become the nucleus of a soon-to-be-established University of Sports for Development.

The President also expressed gratitude to all Ghanaians for their enthusiastic support of the athletes throughout the competition. He congratulated the athletes on their performances and urged them to carry their good form into the Paris Olympics to bring further glory to the continent.

"May the memories of these Games inspire us to work towards a brighter, more prosperous and more united future for Africa and her peoples. Accordingly, ladies and gentlemen, I have the pleasure to declare the 13th African Games (Accra 2023), successfully closed"

…Ignatius Elletey Dances To Receive Flagship Award

The Transport Committee of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the 13th 'African Games has on Sunday evening organized an awards night at the Games Village, Legon to honour distinguished and outstanding drivers and volunteers.

Mr. Samson Deen, Chairman of the Transport Committee hailed everyone who contributed in diverse ways to see to the successful end of the Games which attracted over 5000 athletes, coaches and officials from 53 countries from February 25 when they began active service shuttling between 10 venues in Accra and Cape Coast..

Mr. Deen who is President of the African and Ghana Paralympic Committee said the awards is to show appreciation and motivate the winners to work harder

“Am happy to stand before and congratulate you for the wonderful results you have chalked. If what we saw at the stadium and closing ceremony is real then Ghana has done very well. I am happy and proud. You did it all” he said.

According to him a promise was made to award outstanding volunteers, so there is no promises and fail.

“There were difficulties and challenges but we are Ghanaians and you did well to serve and save the 13th African Games. It is a party for the drivers and volunteers, we didn’t know each other but now we are a family” he stressed.

Mr. Ignatius Elletey, a member of the Transport Committee was adjudged the most distinguished personality. He danced his way to collect his plaque and was applauded by the volunteers.

Certificates of participation were issued to over 450 volunteers and drivers who served the Transport Committee. The best three drivers and volunteers were honoured with medals, as done at the sports center, field, court or pitch.

Group volunteers were stationed at various venues like Airport who were first, Borteyman Sports Complex, Accra Sports Stadium, Trust Sports Arena, Accra International Conference Center (AICC), Alisa Hotel, Theodocia Okoh Hockey Stadium, Achimota Cricket Oval, La Boma Beach, Olebu and the Games Village, Legon.

Fans favoutite, Kamal was voted best driver, taking home a gold medal while other winners took the silver and bronze.

Mr. Kwesi Mantey, head of the Catering Committee commended the drivers and volunteers expressing how important they are and the opportunity they had to serve the nation and international guests.

He shared some experiences of various sports events hosted in Ghana which he was in charge of the food and pointed out Accommodation, Transport, Catering as the most important tasks to be resolved in massive tournament organization and management.

Present at the ceremony were members of the Transport Committee. aka Transport Management Operation (TMO) team who managed over three hundred and thirty-two (332) fleets of vehicles accessible at the service of participants of the Games.

There was available Saloon: 106, Team Bus Marco Polo, 55, Land Cruisers: 29 Waggon 78, Prado, 3, Ayalolo, 30, Minibus: 26 and Trucks: 5.

Mr. Samson Deen, member of the LOC on behalf of the Chairman Dr. Kwaku Ofosu – Asare said “the last time Ghana filled Accra (Ohene Djan) Stadium to this kind of attendance was 16 years ago when Cameroon played Egypt in a CAN 2008 Finals (35000 Attendance) short of the 2 Feb 2008 game between Ghana vs Nigeria (at 45000 Attendance)”

“I single-handedly received Egypt for the tournament and was their official Anchor man (African Origin Travels) received five charter flights from Egypt through the support of late Captain Samir Zaher who supported me throughout his career at the Egyptian FA”.

“The energy and the experience has been there, Ghanaian fans want to see confidence from leadership and our teams”.

“Congratulations Black Satellites and Accra fans for the massive support and super attendance which will go in history to tell the Ghanaian fans deserve respect”.

“We also thank the fans at the closing ceremony of the 13th African Games where over 10,000 fans filled the Legon Stadium and watched the Bhim Nation Performance”.

Ghana's first skeleton Olympian, Akwasi Frimpong, has concluded his 2023/2024 World Cup season on a high note, achieving a remarkable 30th place ranking in the IBSF BMW World Cup Standings. This achievement stands as the highest ever by an African athlete in bobsleigh or skeleton on this prestigious stage.

Frimpong credits his success to the guidance of Coach Matschenz and Coach Patrick Shannon, as well as the support of the Chinese national skeleton team, who welcomed him this season. He also expresses gratitude to his sponsors - On, Momentous, and Murdock Auto Team - for their unwavering support and motivation.

With his sights set on the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, Frimpong acknowledges the global support he has received and vows to continue pushing boundaries in his career. Madam Fatma Samoura, the former FIFA Secretary General from Senegal was one of the special dignitaries who graced the closing ceremony of the 13^th African Games in Accra on Saturday 23^rd March, 2024.

She thanked HE President Nana Akufo-Addo and his colleague African presidents for their unwavering support and commitment towards sports development, in particular.

“Football can indeed bring about positive societal changes’” she said.

Ghana won both men and women’s football gold at the Games which involves 29 disciplines.

Over 5,000 athletes and officials from 53 countries participated in the exciting and memorable Games.

They were supported by 3,000 volunteers, with over 1,000 journalists covering the event.

Fatma Samba Diouf Samoura was appointed as the first female Secretary General of FIFA by president Gianni Infantino and assumed her post on 20 June 2016. Previously she worked in various positions at the United Nations, mostly of a humanitarian nature. In June 2023, she tendered her resignation as Secretary General, which took effect on 31 December 2023.

She was bestowed with a special distinction by African Union Chairperson Moussa Faki through Amb Samate for the services rendered to sports at the University of Ghana Stadium at Legon in Accra, Ghana.
