3 Boxers To Represent Ghana At IBA World Boxing Championships In UAE

Ghana boxers At IBA World Boxing Championships

Reports reaching Yours Truly state that the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) has sent three boxers to the 2025 IBF World boxing championships in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), however the boxers went without a coach.

Before they went nobody knew what was going on at the Federation, until Yours Truly visited the Sports Day celebration and went to watch the boxing stand where some amateur boxers were having an exhibition.

President Bernard Quartey said they are always training and turning out new boxers from juvenile to juniors and elite. He said they are also ready for competitions.

Meanwhile, nobody knew who was going to represent Ghana in an international IBA competition, until the boxers left.

They are 2024 SWAG Best Boxer, Amadu Mohammed (54 kg), Ebenezer Ankrah (60 kg) and Emmanuel Mawuli (57 kg) who are currently in Dubai, UAE to compete at the 2025 IBA World Championships which had it's opening ceremony earlier December 2 with a mouthwatering $300,000 at stake for gold medal winners. The competition which ends on December 13 has $150,000 for the silver medalists and $75,000 for the bronze winners and $10,000 for fifth place per weight.

50% of the purse will go to the boxer, 25% to the coaches and 25% to the federation.

  • Mohammed Amadu won a gold medal at the All-African Games in 2024. He aims to repeat this achievement and inspire his teammates to win medals again this year.
  • Ebenezer Ankrah participated in the 2024 IBA Youth World Championships, advancing to the Round of 32 before his elimination from the competition. This year, he’ll aim to use that experience to secure a medal.
  • Emmanuel Mawuli, having already begun his professional career, has a record of 13-0 with 10 KOs which indicates his potential in the sport. With the advantage of professional experience, 20-year-old will be bringing his best on board.

Throughout the history of the competition, Ghana has only managed to secure one medal. This feat was accomplished by Amon Kotei in the first edition of the tournament in 1974, where he won a bronze medal.

Another worry is that no Ghana trainer or coach went with the boxers.

When Yours Truly quizzed the Vice President of the GBF, Alhaji Dauda Fuseni, he answered that the best person to answer that question is the President.

In another development, the GBF will be heading for elections on December 27, 2025 to elect new leaders for the next four years. Stay tuned for more.
