Kibiwott Kandie holding his arms aloft as he crosses the finish line after setting a new world half marathon record
Kibiwott Kandie is the first athlete to run a half marathon in under 58 minutes, with his winning time of 57:32 more than a minute faster than his previous best
Kenya's Kibiwott Kandie has set a new world record for the half marathon in a race where the top four finishers all beat the previous record in Valencia.
Kandie took 29 seconds off the mark, set by compatriot Geoffrey Kamworor in Copenhagen last year, to complete the 13.1 miles in 57 minutes 32 seconds.
The 24-year-old won by five seconds from Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo.
Rhonex Kipruto was third, 17 seconds down, with fellow Kenyan Alexander Mutiso fourth at 27 seconds back.
In the women's race, Ethiopian Genzebe Dibaba won by 21 seconds with a time of 1:05:18, with Kenya's Sheila Chepkirui second and Senbere Teferi of Ethiopia third.
On Sunday, World Athletics also amended its rules to allow prototype shoes to be used again in races except at those in the Olympics or World Athletics series.
In January, athletics' world governing body had ruled that any new shoe technology developed after 30 April would have to be available on the open market for four months before anyone can use it in competition.
There is a ban on any shoes that have a sole thicker than 40mm.
Kandie was using Adidas shoes that have 39mm of foam.
His record is the latest in a run of world records in recent months, which have mainly been broken by athletes wearing Nike shoes.
Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei smashed the men's 10,000m world record and Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey set a new benchmark in the women's 5,000m in Valencia in October.
Britain's Mo Farah and Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands broke the men's and women's one-hour records respectively in Brussels in September.

Seattle Sounders will play Columbus Crew in the MLS Cup final after winning the Western Conference finals on Monday
Major League Soccer lost almost $1bn (£750m) in revenue during 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
MLS was only two weeks into its historic 25th season when a halt was called to the campaign in March.
It did not resume until July, with the MLS is Back competition in Florida, before a revised regular schedule ran from 12 August.
"The overall [financial] impact is going to be deeper than we expected," said MLS commissioner Don Garber.
With the three Canadian teams forced to play all their matches in the United States and Columbus Crew only able to admit a crowd of 1,500 when they host Seattle Sounders in the MLS Cup final on Sunday, the financial effects of the season will be felt for a long time.
"Revenue for the league and its clubs is down almost $1bn compared to last year," added Garber.
"But we also incurred expenses we were not intending to occur, including charter planes for the teams and creating the whole bubble around MLS is Back."
It has led to a difficult first season for the two expansion teams, David Beckham's Inter Miami and Nashville, who made the Eastern Conference semi-finals, and creates an uncertain backdrop for Austin FC, who will enter the league in 2021.
However, while plans continue around a March launch for the next season, huge uncertainty remains.
"We are concerned about the situation leading into 2021 and we are trying to figure out how to manage through it," said Garber. "No business could sustain the kind of impact we sustained for two years in a row.
"The challenge for next season is nobody has the magic date for when fans can enter stadiums and it will vary state by state.
"We need to make a schedule. We can't wait for a vaccine and we don't know what the reaction will be of fans returning to stadiums.
"It is not just about fans. Fifa has laid out their international dates and Concacaf has laid out Champions League dates. We will need flexibility."

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey was forced off injured during first-half stoppage time of his side’s Premier League defeat against Tottenham.
Partey returned from injury to make his first appearance for the Gunners in over a month when he was named in the starting XI for the north London derby on Sunday.
He walked over to the touchline during the build-up to Harry Kane’s goal that put Spurs two goals up and was replaced by Dani Ceballos immediately after and just seconds before half-time. Spurs would go on to win the derby 2-0, returning to first place in the Premier League.
After the match Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta confirmed Party would have an MRI, saying he appeared to aggravate his previous injury.
“I applaud their first goal, it is world-class, but the second goal we are a man down, we leave a massive gap and they take advantage,” Arteta told the BBC.
“He [Thomas Partey] has to stay on the pitch. It looks like the same injury he has already had, he will have an MRI.”
Partey had been out of action since he was taken off in his side’s 3-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa on November 8 and subsequently missed Premier League matches against Leeds and Wolves as well as the Europa League encounters against Molde and Rapid Vienna.
The Ghana international only returned to Arsenal training during the week and Arteta said after his side’s win against Rapid Vienna that the summer signing could feature against their city rivals.
Ahead of the game on Sunday, Arteta was asked about the 27-year-old’s inclusion in his starting XI.
He told Sky Sports: “We didn’t expect him to be fit for the game but he has been training well and [is] ready to play.”
Arsenal fell behind just 13 minutes into the match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Son Heung-min led Spurs’ charge forward, combining with striker Kane before lashing past Bernd Leno from outside the box.
Son then turned provider as he passed to Kane who then fired in to double the home side’s advantage, which would be the game’s final goal.
